🌿 Some plants are more than just plants… they’re family history. ❤️

Today I had the absolute honor of visiting a client’s home to give a very old, very large Split-Leaf Tree Philodendron some love, cleaning it up, splitting it, and repotting it so it can continue growing for years to come.

But the most special part of this plant wasn’t its size… it was its story. 🥹🌿

This plant originally came from a cutting of my client’s mother’s plant. Her original plant eventually became so large that it outgrew her space and was donated to the Como Zoo Conservatory many years ago.

And here’s the incredible part—because the plant was so massive, it took several men and a sling to get it into the conservatory! 😳🌿

It still lives there today, with a plaque honoring his mom. ❤️

Today, I was able to help carry that story forward by splitting a piece of this special plant for his friend.

I absolutely love that plants can connect generations, preserve memories, and continue growing long after their original roots have traveled somewhere new.

There is something so satisfying about growing your own food and preserving a little bit of summer to enjoy later. Today I spent some time in the kitchen pickling zucchini and canning beets from my garden, and my heart is full.

I’m patiently waiting for the rest of my garden to catch up so I can can carrots, green beans, baby corn, and make fresh salsa too! Gardening has a beautiful way of reminding us to slow down, be patient, and appreciate the seasons we’re in.

At HappyRoots, I love sharing all things that grow—from houseplants to pollinator gardens to homegrown vegetables. It all starts with putting our hands in the dirt. 🌱

🌿 Plant Spotlight: The Exotic Toothache Plant! 🌿

Have you ever heard of the Toothache Plant? This fascinating plant isn’t just beautiful—it’s been used for generations for both culinary and traditional medicinal purposes!

🌼 The flower buds create a unique tingling, buzzing sensation in your mouth (it’s definitely an experience!) and have traditionally been used to temporarily soothe tooth discomfort.

🍃 The leaves and flowers can also be used in small amounts to add a surprising citrusy, peppery kick to salads, cocktails, and other dishes.

I started this plant from seed a couple of years ago, and it’s become one of my favorite conversation pieces in the garden!

While I don’t currently carry Toothache Plants in the shop, I can special order seeds if there’s enough interest. 🌱

At HappyRoots, my love for plants doesn’t stop at the front door 🌱

I’m also licensed in Minnesota to design and work with perennials and outdoor annuals—bringing gardens to life from the ground up.

Last year, I was honored to receive a grant to create my native butterfly (pollinator) garden 🦋💛
It’s become one of my favorite spaces I’ve ever planted—full of movement, color, and life that supports bees, butterflies, and local ecosystems.

While houseplants are a big part of what I do, my passion also grows outdoors—helping people create gardens that feel beautiful and purposeful.

Confession time… 🌿

I almost didn’t share this video because my house isn’t magazine-perfect.

But then I thought, why not show the reality? Plants are a huge part of my life, and this is what that looks like—watering cans, plant projects, a few piles that need attention, and plants in just about every sunny corner. Pets and people and messes that we all share our lives with ! It’s reality 😊

🕷️ Spider Plant Upgrade Day! 🕷️

Sometimes even the plant lady’s plants need a little extra room to grow! 🌱

This massive spider plant has been thriving for years and finally outgrew its pot, so today was repotting day. What started as one plant has grown into a beautiful, overflowing centerpiece that was definitely ready for a new home.

Repotting isn’t just about a bigger pot—it’s about giving roots room to expand, refreshing the soil, and setting your plant up for even more healthy growth. 💚 It grew so large I was able to split into 4 large plants !
