🌿 Tuesday Plant Tip 🌿

When your plant starts dropping a few yellow leaves… don’t panic! 💚

This is my giant umbrella tree, and lately I’ve noticed a few yellow leaves showing up. 🍂

With fall arriving, I’m keeping a closer eye on her because plants can react to the change in temperature, light and watering needs as the seasons change.

A few things I’m checking:

🌿 Temperature: She’s right next to a sliding door, so I’m watching for chilly drafts and sudden temperature changes.

☀️ Light: As our days get shorter, I’m making sure she’s still getting plenty of bright, indirect light.

💧 Watering: I’m checking the soil before watering. Plants generally use less water as growth slows, so I don’t want to keep her soil wet.

🍃 Older leaves: An occasional older leaf turning yellow and dropping can simply be part of a plant’s natural cycle.

The important thing is to look at the whole plant. A few yellow leaves don’t necessarily mean something is wrong. In my case, I’m going to keep an eye on her and make a few seasonal adjustments as needed. 🪴

Even the plants at HappyRoots aren’t perfect—and that’s okay! 😉🌿

🌿🪴 NEW PLANT DROP AT HAPPYROOTS TOMORROW! 🪴🌿

Fresh plants are on their way, and I’m bringing in multiple choices of each variety! The photo shows just one example of each, but there will be more to choose from.

Here’s what’s coming:

Norfolk Island Pine A tropical evergreen that makes a beautiful little indoor tree and loves bright, indirect light.

Nettle Green Baby Tears Tiny leaves, big personality! This delicate, trailing plant loves humidity and looks beautiful hanging.

Dracaena ‘Marginata’ (Dragon Tree) Tough, striking and beginner-friendly. Let the soil dry out between waterings and it will reward you with beautiful growth.

Stromanthe Triostar Those pink, cream and green leaves are REAL! This prayer-plant relative moves its leaves throughout the day.

Homalomena ‘Emerald Green’ Beautiful heart-shaped leaves with a lush tropical look. A great choice if you love that jungle vibe.

🍂🌿 Fall is coming… but your outdoor plants don’t have to go! 🌿🍂

The nights are getting cooler, which means it’s time to start thinking about bringing some of those summer beauties back inside.

Every summer I love giving my Boston ferns, Bird of Paradise, geraniums, and toothache plants, among others a little vacation outdoors. They soak up the sunshine, grow like crazy, and put on a beautiful show all summer long.

But when fall arrives, it’s time to bring them home again! 🏡🌱

✨ A few tips for bringing outdoor plants inside:

🌿 Don’t wait for a hard frost. Start the transition when nighttime temperatures begin consistently dipping into the 50s.

🐜 Check for hitchhikers! Look carefully under leaves, around stems, and along the soil surface for insects before bringing plants indoors.

Give them a good shower. A gentle spray of water can help rinse away dust and unwanted little visitors.

🪴 Check the soil. This is a great time to make sure your plants aren’t staying overly wet. Indoor plants use water much more slowly than they do outside.

☀️ Give them the best light you can. A bright window or supplemental grow light can make the transition much easier.

💚 Expect a little adjustment. Some yellowing or leaf drop can happen when a plant goes from the bright, breezy outdoors to the indoor environment. Don’t panic!

And remember… bringing them inside is only half the job. Winter care is a little different than summer care, but with a little love, many of these plants can reward you with another beautiful summer next year. 🌱

So before you say goodbye to those gorgeous summer plants, take a closer look. You might just have a houseplant waiting to come back inside.

🌿 Some plants are more than just plants… they’re family history. ❤️

Today I had the absolute honor of visiting a client’s home to give a very old, very large Split-Leaf Tree Philodendron some love, cleaning it up, splitting it, and repotting it so it can continue growing for years to come.

But the most special part of this plant wasn’t its size… it was its story. 🥹🌿

This plant originally came from a cutting of my client’s mother’s plant. Her original plant eventually became so large that it outgrew her space and was donated to the Como Zoo Conservatory many years ago.

And here’s the incredible part—because the plant was so massive, it took several men and a sling to get it into the conservatory! 😳🌿

It still lives there today, with a plaque honoring his mom. ❤️

Today, I was able to help carry that story forward by splitting a piece of this special plant for his friend.

I absolutely love that plants can connect generations, preserve memories, and continue growing long after their original roots have traveled somewhere new.
