☀️ August in Georgia can be BRUTAL on plants.

Heat, humidity, blazing afternoon sun… this is the time of year when you really find out what’s tough.

We took a walk around Collier’s today and found a few plants that are still looking pretty darn good in the middle of August.

🦋 Pugster® Butterfly Bush
💚 Limelight Hydrangea
🎨 Coleus
💜 Purple Heart

Some give you flowers, some give you incredible foliage, but all four are bringing plenty of color to the dog days of summer.

Now we want to hear from you: what plant is absolutely THRIVING in your yard right now? 👇

If your yard gets FULL SUN, this is one hydrangea you need to know about! ☀️🌿

Limelight Hydrangea is a panicle hydrangea that can handle the sun and summer heat much better than the traditional hydrangeas most people are familiar with.

And those blooms? 🤯 Huge lime-green flowers that mature to creamy white before taking on pink tones later in the season.

It may be 90° outside, but fall has officially started inside our greenhouse!

Our first round of fall vegetable transplants has made it onto the benches.

Now, before anyone gets too excited, it is still TOO EARLY to plant these outside! We have plenty of Georgia summer heat left, and these little plants still have some growing to do.

But fall vegetable season starts for us long before it feels like fall outside. These collards started as seeds right here in the greenhouse, and over the next several weeks these benches will continue filling up with collards, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and more.

We’ll keep you updated as they grow and let you know when the time is right to start planting. 🥬

What fall vegetable do you look forward to planting every year? 👇

We just received Jazz Hands® Variegated Loropetalum from Proven Winners, and the foliage is what really catches your eye. Even when it’s not blooming, the mix of pink, cream, burgundy, and green keeps it looking colorful.

✔️ Grows about 4–6 feet tall
☀️ Thrives in full sun to part sun
🌸 Bright fringe flowers in spring with colorful foliage the rest of the year

Jazz Hands Loropetalum are strong growing varieties with outstanding form, flowers and foliage, including Jazz Hands Variegated loropetalum. Jazz Hands Variegated is the first ever variegated loropetalum; its new growth is splashed with pink and white variegation, while mature foliage is a rich purple color on this Chinese fringe flower shrub. This distinctive plant may be used as a specimen or a hedging plant making it ideal loropetalum for hedges.

2027… what?! 🌿

Yes, you read that right.

One of the very first crops for 2027 is officially underway. Today was all about planting Boston ferns, and our greenhouse is already filling up with hanging baskets that will spend the next several months growing into the full, lush ferns you see each spring!

Some plants become part of the greenhouse family.

This Crown of Thorns has been growing here for over 30 years and has become one of the fixtures of our greenhouse.

Native to Madagascar, Crown of Thorns (Euphorbia milii) is known for its colorful blooms, incredible drought tolerance, and remarkably long lifespan. With the right care, these plants can thrive for decades.

One thing to keep in mind is that they are not cold hardy in our area. They should be protected from freezing temperatures and are best grown in containers that can be moved indoors or grown as a full time houseplant.

It’s a reminder that some of the most interesting plants aren’t always the newest ones. Sometimes they’re the ones that have quietly stood the test of time.

It may look simple, but this little machine saves us hours of work.

Every fall vegetable starts with a single seed. Instead of placing all 288 seeds by hand, our vacuum seeder picks up one seed at a time and places it into every cell of the tray.

It’s one of the many behind-the-scenes steps that helps us grow thousands of healthy plants each season.

What vegetable do you always make sure to grow in your fall garden? 🌱👇

At first glance, these mums still look like a sea of green.

But look a little closer, and you’ll see tiny flower buds beginning to form. Over the next several weeks, these plants will transform into the colorful mums that brighten porches and landscapes every fall.

Fall is getting closer every day. 🌼

💜 One of the best shrubs for butterflies… and it doesn’t need a huge yard.

Pugster Blue® is a compact butterfly bush that stays around 3–4 feet tall and wide, but still puts on an impressive display of vibrant purple blooms all summer long.

It’s a great choice for smaller landscapes, foundation plantings, or even large containers. Plus, the butterflies absolutely love it.
