If you walked up and down Main Street today, you may be wondering why there were orange cones next to and cardboard around the lampposts. You may have also noticed they're shinier thanks to a new paint job by the Jackson Rotary Club and City Manager Carl Simpson. Some touch-up work will likely be done over the coming days, but this is one of the results from the Historical Jackson Business Association (HJBA) Beautification Committee.

The Committee will also present its request for two pieces of public artwork to the City Council at its May 28 meeting. The pieces will be a kneeling miner and his mule in front of the Jackson Fire Department station, and a large mule in Petkovich Park.

Other beautification ideas are in development, and we'll have more news about the statues after the meeting at the end of May. In the meantime, Happy Mother's Day to all you moms out there!

The Historic Jackson Business Association (HJBA) Beautification Committee has been hard at work planning upgrades along Main Street. The committee includes:

• Chairperson Stacey Landreth of Jackson Realty
• Amador County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Brad Barnard
• Public Works Superintendent Bree Wilder
• City Manager Carl Simpson
• Mayor Steve McLean
• HJBA and community members

Here's what the committee is working on…

• The 24 lamp posts are scheduled to be cleaned and painted a new coat of black on the first two Saturdays of May -- May 4 and 11, to be precise. The Jackson Rotary Club and Carl Simpson will paint the lampposts.

• The committee is exploring attaching flower planters to the Jackson Fire Department firehouse wall facing Main Street.

• In addition to new signs approved by the Jackson City Council on April 8, the Committee is working with The Metal Zoo to place rustic sculptures along Main Street and other city properties such as Petkovich Park. The photos give you an idea of what these sculptures could look like.

• The outdated public bulletin boards will be replaced by new ones that will include current events, a street map, and a QR code for walking tours of the city that you can follow on your phone.

If you have questions, suggestions, or thoughts about beautification efforts, please leave a comment. Stacey and other committee members will respond as soon as possible.

We'll have more news and photos after more committee meetings and as more beautification work is done. Have a prosperous rest of your April, and enjoy shopping and dining on Jackson Main Street!
