Fall doesn't announce itself. Nights get longer, the water gives up the heat it spent all summer collecting, flows drop and clear, and the bugs that carried you through August thin out.

Trout notice all of it before you do. Our complete guide to the season β€” where they move, what the thermometer tells you, how to fish around spawning gravel, and twelve patterns that cover the fall menu.

Grass to the water's edge, a little depth, current running tight against the dirt. That's hopper water β€” and most people fish it from too far away.

Take the nymph off. One fly, close enough to the grass that it makes you pay attention. Our new guide covers reading the feeding lane, picking your casting angle, building the rig, and the eight flies we'd have on hand.

The lake looks the same as it did a month ago. It isn't.

Cooling nights break down the layers that kept trout pinned deep all summer, and the fish move back onto shelves and w**d edges you can reach from the bank. Our complete fall stillwater guide covers how to read where your lake actually is, what turnover really does, how to find the depth, and the eight flies that cover a cold-water box.

Is your leech is hanging wrong?

Put a standard beadhead under an indicator and it hangs head-up with its tail dropping away beneath it. A balanced leech doesn't β€” a pin carries the bead out ahead of the hook eye, so the fly hangs dead level, point riding up, marabou breathing with every bit of chop.

That's the posture a cruising trout reads as food. In a lake there's no current pushing your fly past a fish, so they've got all day to look β€” and posture is the detail they're best at catching.

Seven new patterns, in black, brown, and olive with silver, orange, or chartreuse beads. The full guide covers how the balanced system works, how to fish it under an indicator, and which color to reach for when.

Labor Day weekend is the last long one of the summer. Three days, thinner crowds, and water that's finally cooling off.

It's also the weekend to bring someone with you β€” the kid who's been asking, the friend who says he'd try it if he had a rod. That's what the extra setup in the truck is for. Not the backup. The loaner.

Through Monday: 20% off every Yellowstone II rod and combo kit, plus the Yellowstone Signature rod and combo. Use code LABORDAY20 at checkout.

Sale ends Monday, September 7th at 11:59 PM MDT.

There are few takes in fly fishing quite like a brown trout eating a mouse after dark. You'll often hear the fish before you ever see it β€” a heavy splash or a deep slurp somewhere along the bank β€” followed by the unmistakable weight of a trout coming tight on the other end of the line.

We wrote the full guide: when to fish it, where to target, the retrieve that actually gets a fish to eat, and the gear built for fighting something big while you can't see a thing.

Camp's set up, the kids are antsy, and it's finally time to get a line in the water. Here's the good news: nobody needs a perfect cast for this to go well.

Panfish forgive almost everything a first-timer does wrong β€” and they're exactly why bluegill and crappie make the best on-ramp into fly fishing there is. We wrote the full guide: where to find them, how to fish a popper, how to handle your catch safely, and the gear for a first family trip.

Drive along nearly any freestone river after a hard rain and you'll find it blown out β€” high, brown, unfishable. Round a bend below a dam, and the water turns gin-clear again, like someone flipped a switch.

That's a tailwater, and it plays by completely different rules β€” same temperature, same flow, same food supply whether it's January or July. We wrote the full guide: how to read it, and the 16 patterns across four food groups that never go out of season.
