Florida Bungalow Florida Bungalow is the creation of Brian Walsh

Brian was raised at the Jersey Shore...most people knew him from local flea markets whether he was buying or selling...but most notably for his outlandish flea market booths decorated in scenes from bedrooms to living rooms in the center of fields or on sand...creating a welcoming space to stop in and shop! Brian's love for vintage fabric spans decades...he first started collecting at local garage sales in the early 80's while still in high school...and continued his passion while exploring Miami's South Beach Neighborhood in the late 80's when first visiting with his dad on a business trip. It was love at first sight..something about the raw vulnerability of a city that had once seen its glory days...sitting virtually abandoned from blight and rot...just waiting to be sifted through for treasures like an archeological dig for antiques...it became his mission...traveling to Miami Beach for weeks at a time each year ever since...long enough to see South Beach rise from its ashes to a glorious resort on the sea. Today Brian designs women's bags and pillows repurposed from vintage fabrics from the 20's - 50's...creating one of a kind pieces often made of several varying matching and unmatching prints...Brian follows his heart when he designs and likes what he likes...which is often times designs that march to the beat of a different drum. You can also find him on Ebay and Etsy where he carries a selection of designs as well as selling the largest collection of vintage barkcloth and era fabrics on the planet to other designers and collectors alike.

Exotic...Nostalgic...the pattern on left a 1940’s cruise ship barkcloth as noted in Michelle Mancini’s book “Fabulous Fabrics of the 20’s 30’s 40’s and 50’s”. The pattern on right the infamous “Design Zomba” which is just an iconic piece of tropical design history with a nod to Malawi. So many of the mid century textiles were given names of the places and things that inspired textile designers. This duo with double piping and the one has a tassel fringe from my 1920’s fringe collection. A reimagined 1940’s South Beach pairing with all the know how to reach in and stroke a heart. xo

Time transporting to 1940 Post Art Deco South Beach in a Swank-a-delic pair of Miami hotel style pillows made from original old stock 40’s tropical leafy barkcloth…this glammy duo is so special…I used not only vintage barkcloth that was original yardage…but I also used my fringe bolts from the 1920’s and 30’s…no details were spared to elevate and nostalgia-fy these beauties…catch that tiny line of pink piping as the prelude to the fringe! Will be in my shop tomorrow!

I had my last phone call with Carlton right after Covid. He wanted to collaborate and then he died. He would call me from time to time seemingly in disbelief of my fabric collection.

Four years ago today, we lost Carleton Varney, whose passion for color, beauty, and joyful living continues to inspire us every day. On this anniversary, we encourage everyone to take a moment to appreciate the joy and color that make life so wonderful. May we continue to share that spirit and honor the exuberant legacy of Mr. Varney. 🩵
