The Gilded Age was a sparkling time—not just for magnificent homes and legendary society figures, but for extraordinary jewelry as well. Growing up, most people associated the Gilded Age with Newport cottages and Fifth Avenue mansions. As a third-generation jewelry designer, I came to associate it with the jewels.

Hi, my name is Timothy Vanover, and I founded a fine jewelry company called Gilded Age Jewelry. I study the great jewelers of the Gilded Age and create one-of-a-kind pieces inspired by their artistry.

America's new industrial fortunes transformed not only the nation's architecture and social life, but also its jewelry. Families such as the Astors, Vanderbilts, Morgans, and Whitneys commissioned extraordinary works from Tiffany & Co., Marcus & Co., Cartier, and other great jewelers of the era, helping establish New York as one of the world's great centers of luxury.

At the pinnacle of New York society stood Caroline Astor, whose magnificent diamonds became symbols of the elegance and ambition of the Gilded Age. At the height of New York's Gilded Age, she set the standard for society—and her magnificent diamond stomacher reflected the wealth and craftsmanship of the era. (Artist's interpretation of Caroline Astor and her famous diamond stomacher.)

Thank you for welcoming me—I look forward to many great discussions about the jewels, jewelers, and remarkable people who defined this extraordinary era.
