Let's trash talk. Literally. ๐๏ธ
Downtown Jamaica just got a serious upgrade. We're rolling out brand new trash containers across the district to support New York City's containerization rules and help keep our streets cleaner than ever. Each one includes cross streets, a small detail that goes a long way in helping our many out-of-town visitors find their way around.
These containers are part of our ongoing commitment to a cleaner, safer, more welcoming DJQ. They give our BID, along with DSNY and other community partners, a better way to manage waste collection. It's one more piece of the work we do every day to support small businesses, maintain public spaces, and build the kind of neighborhood people are proud to call home.
We're not the only ones doing this work! These branded containers you see throughout the city usually aren't installed by Sanitation. They come from Business Improvement Districts (BIDs). There are 78 BIDs across New York City, and together they support the collection of over 10,000 bags of trash every single day. That's real, tangible work happening on the ground in neighborhoods just like ours.
It's fun to see how different BIDs use their containers as an opportunity to inject creativity and create a sense of place. Union Square Partnership designed bold, colorful CitiBins that double as neighborhood art. Uptown Grand Central and the East Harlem 125th BID just installed new containers, too! Westchester Square BID uses custom vinyl wraps to build neighborhood pride block by block. Beyond keeping trash bags off the sidewalk, these branded containers also help newcomers and visitors orient themselves, giving them a visual cue for exactly where they are in the neighborhood.
Now it's our turn! Keep an eye out for our new containers around Downtown Jamaica, and know that every one of them represents our commitment to a cleaner, safer DJQ.
