Mitranand Yogi is a local spiritual practitioner and yoga teacher based in the Jamestown and Western New York region, who describes himself as a simple student on the path of self-realization.
Mitranand considers Bhavagan Das, a well known western yogi chant artist and devotee of Neem Karoli Baba, to be his primary guru, he was given the spiritual name Mitranand by the late master yogi Baba Hari Das.
He is connected to lineages such as Bhaktti Yoga (the yoga of devotion) Nada Yoga (the yoga of sound chanting) and elements of Himalayan and Buddhist contemplative traditions.
Mantra Meditation:
Mitranand utilized foundational mantras, notably Om Mani Padme Hum, associated with compassion and awakening.
Chanting and Devotion:
Following the path of his teacher's, he engages in devotional singing, sacred music, and meditive chanting
Quiet Practice:
He describes his daily path as that of a simple, unassuming practitioner focused on inner discipline rather than a formal organizational institution.
Mitranand plays a traditional tamboura along with chanting to enhance the meditive experience.
Chanting along with the drone sound of the traditional tamboura during meditation calms your mind, deepens your focus, and balances your nervous system through rich harmonic sound vibrations.
The continuous, drone-like sound of the tamboura gives your mind a steady anchor. This makes it easier to let go of wandering thoughts and stay present during meditation. The acoustic overtones of the instrument resonate deeply in the body. This helps lower your heart rate and slows down rapid breathing. The rich blend of frequencies the tamboura creates, support your voice. It helps you stay in tune effortlessly and deepens the meditative quality of the mantra.
Traditionally Indian music theory views the drone as a representation of universal sound (Om). Combining it with vocal repetition helps clear mental clutter and align your inner energy. The absence of a changing melody lets you step away from analyzing music. You experience pure sound and inner stillness instead.
Keep an eye out for upcoming events at Crystal Roots with Mitranand! Planning is in the works for a sound meditation with the tamboura, while incorporating chanting of ancient mantras, for sometime in September!
