Oops! I'm a day late, but Happy Windtalker Wednesday! All around us the peonies are emerging, and what a beautiful sight they are! They bring with them a sweet fragrance and old fashioned charm. No flower bed is complete without them. Peonies are a lasting perennial prized for their lush, full blossoms, that mark the change of the seasons. Spring and it's early blooming flowers is behind us and the summer has begun. Peonies came to us from Europe in the late 1800s. Generally, the beautiful blooms symbolize prosperity, good fortune and honor.

One of the earliest bursts of color in the flower garden comes from a member of the Brassica family...yes, the family that includes broccoli and brussel sprouts! Lunaria is more commonly know as "Honestly," "Money Plant," or "Silver Dollar Plant."

Lunaria is technically a biennial, which means the plant will grow in it's first year, then it will bloom and produce seed the second year. Money plant re-seeds very easily, so once you get it established, you'll have this early bloomer for many years. The advantage to having a good sized patch of Lunaria is being able to cut some for early fragrant bouquets, and still have some to produce seed and "money." The unique translucent disks will be a welcome addition to your dried arrangements.

The most common meanings for Lunaria are honest and sincerity. If this plant isn't in your flower beds, we recommend adding it to your landscape. The beautiful splash of purple is a welcome sight soon after the winter departs, and is beautiful in each stage of it's development. Well, here we are at the beginning of another flower season. Plants have been moved out of the greenhouse and seeds are in the soil. The miracle of the growing begins again. Last year's growing season brought many challenges. The early rains made for late planting, then the summer heat and dryness made it difficult to keep things watered.

This is where we remind our followers again, we are flower farmers...not florists! Everything we offer in our bouquets and buckets are foraged or grown by us! Although we can't claim that all of the seeds we use are organic, our growing methods are. We use no chemical herbicides or pesticides on our blooms, giving you the assurance of safe, chemical-free bouquets.

As with any type of farming, each year is a learning experience. We will continue to experiment, revamp and reassess, which will include both failures and successes. Beginning next Wednesday, June 3rd, we will be reviving our Windtalker Wednesday posts, which will highlight a particular flower and it's meaning. The posts will also give updates on any pop-up events or workshops for those interested. We look forward to providing you with beautiful bouquets for all of your needs, big and small.
