Hilyofthevalley stands in prayer and solidarity with the Ukrainian people as they endure senseless violence, suffering, displacement and danger. One hundred and ninety-eight lives have been lost since this week’s Russian invasion began.

In their latest statement, the United States Council of Catholic Bishops exhorts us: “In times of trouble, we call on the tender mercy of God … to guide our feet to the way of peace (Lk 1:78-79). May our prayers, joined with those of people around the world, help guide those waging war to end the meaningless suffering and restore peace. Our Lady, Queen of Peace, pray for us."

Please pray for the people of Ukraine, and consider supporting humanitarian aid efforts to uphold their safety and dignity. 🇺🇦 In the words of Pope Francis, “may the Queen of Peace preserve the world from the madness of war.”

Elegant and understated, January’s birthstone is the rich, blood-red garnet.

Hilyofthevalley’s January birthstone rosary features Czech glass beads in this distinctive shade, as well as a St. Francis of Assisi centerpiece and a striking San Damiano crucifix. The crucifix is a replica of the ornate 12th-century original, still intact, before which a young Francis prayed for guidance, and it remains the symbol of the Franciscan order which he founded.

🎨: The Descent of the Holy Spirit, 1612/1613, Juan Bautista Maíno.

Today is the Feast of Saint Martin de Porres, a man particularly pertinent to our times. St. Martin (1579-1639) is the patron saint of social justice, persons of mixed race (Martin himself suffered persecution and exclusion due to his heritage), and healthcare workers, among other things. A man of deep faith and humility with a special devotion to the rosary, Martin served the poor and dying until the final year of his life, dying on this day in 1639.

We pray for his intercession:

“…Mindful of your unbounded
and helpful charity to all levels of society and also of your meekness and humility of heart,
we offer our petitions to you.
Pour out upon our families
the precious gifts of your solicitous and generous intercession;
show to the people of every race and every colour
the paths of unity and of justice…”

Pray for us, St. Martin de Porres!
