The Mississippi Kites returned again this year to their hang out on Ellis Blvd (near Mississippi Street, of course!) and Steve snapped these pics of a Hatching Year Kite receiving a "food delivery" from an adult. While a variety of insects (like grasshoppers and katydids) are usually listed as their first pics for food, they do take small vertebrates like frogs and small rodents---and obviously small birds like they have done here! We have no idea what species of bird was served for dinner her!

Check out the various stages of Black Swallowtail Caterpillars on the Bronze Fennel JUST outside the front door at BIV today! So far they number 23. Especially evident on a couple of the pics are examples of "cryptic coloration" to help these little guys blend into the fennel plant and not be eaten by the abundant BIV birds! Here are some Summertime bird pics from a favorite Roadside Park on 63 south that Steve and I like to visit! WELL...one of them is NOT a bird pic, but still cute! A very cooperative summer Tanager, a Blue Grosbeak, Carolina Wren, and the adorable Bunny🙂. Not pictured was a gorgeous female Orchard Oriole this trip.

Steve is in Jamesport, MO this morning, at the home of the very generous Ivan Ray Miller family as they share "their" Purple Martins with an abundance of visitors! Check out all of those houses and gourds. What a fun way to experience these wonderful birds!
