Downtown Book & Toy

07/09/2025

For nearly a decade, one family came in every year to let their daughter pick out a birthday book. Just one. She’d wander the aisles for an hour, reading jacket covers like sacred text, before finally landing on *the* one.

She’s a teenager now, but her mom recently told us those birthday books sit in a row on her shelf, each one labeled with the year and a memory.
That’s the kind of tradition that turns a store into a second home.

Have a favorite tradition or memory from your time at Downtown Book & Toy? Share it in the comments or message us. We’d love to feature your story next.

Downtown Book & Toy’s story lives on in the memories we share and the space we continue.
Now reopened as book/shop, etc.

From the DTBT Transition Team: Honoring the Legacy

For more than 40 years, this bookstore held space in downtown Jefferson City.
For childhood memories. First chapter books. Holiday traditions. Generations of loyal readers.

It’s impossible to overstate what Downtown Book & Toy meant to this community.
And we wouldn’t want to.

We’re not here to rewrite that story.
We’re here to honor it and carry it forward, one meaningful page at a time.

The shelves you see today? They’ve held thousands of titles over the decades.
The creak in the floorboards? It’s the sound of footsteps past and present.
The spirit of the store? It’s still here. Evolving, yes but still rooted in joy, discovery, and local love.

We know not everyone embraces change right away.
We know legacy can feel personal… because it is.

But we also believe legacies are living things.
And the best way to keep them alive is to let them grow.

Were you a regular at DTBT?
Did you have a favorite reading nook? A go-to gift? A moment that stuck with you?

We’d love to feature your memories, online and in-store, as part of our legacy series.
📩 Email your story to [email protected]

Thank you to everyone who helped build the story of Downtown Book & Toy.
Your chapters mattered. And they always will.

We look forward to building what comes next - with you.

With gratitude,

As the soft opening of book/shop, etc. begins, we want to take a moment to honor the chapter that came between.

Lauren joined Downtown Book & Toy in November 2024. What started as a quiet message offering part-time help quickly unfolded into something much more. In those early weeks, she brought fresh ideas, curious questions, and an unmistakable spark. She saw what this store had been and imagined what it might still become.

By January 2025, the conversations turned serious. We explored the possibility of a partnership or whether a full transfer of ownership would be the best way forward. What would it mean to pass the torch - not just to another owner, but to someone who deeply understood the weight of this space and its 40+ year history? Someone who had already fallen in love with its quirks, its community, and the quiet magic of being a bookstore in Downtown Jefferson City.

As winter turned to spring, the decision became clear.

Our priority was not just preservation - it was transformation with integrity. The legacy of bookselling in this community deserved to be reimagined by someone who had already shown up with heart, long before it was ever hers to build.

And that someone was Lauren.

She offered sweat equity. Organized behind the scenes. She built the bridge between what was and what could be.
She didn’t rush the process. She honored our timelines. She respected the roots of this place even as she dreamed up something entirely her own.

Ownership was earned.
Not handed over.

So as book/shop, etc. opens its doors, we want you to know:
This is a continuation, not a coincidence.
A thoughtful, intentional evolution months in the making.

We hope you’ll visit. Walk through.
Feel what’s familiar and what’s brand new.
The space may look different, but the heartbeat remains.

We’re proud that this space continues to be a home for stories and now, a new story begins. Please join us in celebrating this beautiful new chapter.

-The DTBT Transition Team

We open our doors July 11.
But don’t expect perfection - expect presence.

book/shop, etc. wasn’t built to rush.
It was built to root.

We’re opening slowly. Friday evenings and Saturdays only throughout July - because we’re doing this without debt, without burnout, and without losing the parts of ourselves we set out to honor.

You won’t see a finished store on day one.
There won’t be a polished sign out front just yet.
Not all of our vendors will be in place.
And the shelves?
They’ll grow with us.

This is retail as ritual.
Commerce as community.
A business model that honors sustainable longevity over indebted speed.

We’re not here to win a race.
We’re here to build something that lasts. Through slow seasons, real life, and the kind of connection that doesn’t come from grand openings, but from opening up.

July soft launch hours:
⏰ Fridays 4–8pm
⏰ Saturdays 10am–5pm

Come as you are.
We’ll be doing the same.

The final window display for Downtown Book & Toy.

This storefront has been a fixture in our community for decades. A place where stories began, imaginations ran wild, and childhood memories were made. Before we move forward, we wanted to take a moment to honor that.

This display is for every person who walked through these doors with wonder in their eyes. For every book bought, toy played with, and memory made. For Beth, the Cowley Family, and the legacy they nurtured.

And now, with joy (and maybe a few happy tears), we’re getting ready to turn the page. The next chapter of this space is coming soon - new name, new energy, same heart.

Thank you, Downtown Book & Toy, for everything you’ve been.
We can’t wait to show you what’s next.

With gratitude and big dreams,
Lauren Janee
Owner of book/shop, etc. - coming soon!
