52 Bookshelves…are still not here.

We were told they would be delivered yesterday (Tuesday), but now they are scheduled to arrive Friday.

We still need your help and will post another update as soon as they have arrived.

Thank you for being patient with us (and for us 😅).

I would like everyone to know that I met one of my favorite authors today and handled it with the grace and composure you’d expect from a fully functioning adult.

Step 1: Accidentally touch the author’s butt while posing for the picture.

Step 2: Die internally.

Step 3: Forget how to be a person.

Step 4: Produce… whatever this face is.

Please enjoy this photographic evidence that no matter how old you get, your inner awkward middle-schooler is always waiting in the wings for her big moment.

Anyway…

Daggermouth was unforgettable.

Unfortunately, so was I.

Reading has always been one of the most political things a person can do.

Books have challenged governments, churches, classrooms, and dinner tables.

Teaching women to read was political.

Desegregating libraries was political.

Publishing q***r stories was political.

Writing about disability was political.

Telling the truth about race was political.

We don’t believe books exist to tell you what to think.

We believe they exist to make you think.

Our shelves reflect what we believe makes a healthy community:

That women deserve equal representation and leadership.

That every person deserves bodily autonomy.

That LGBTQIA+ people deserve dignity, safety, and the freedom to exist openly.

That sensible gun reform can coexist with responsible gun ownership.

That libraries deserve protection.

That public education deserves investment.

That diversity is something to celebrate, not erase.

That disabled voices belong in every conversation.

That banned books should be read, not feared.

And above all, that democracy only works when people participate.

We’re fortunate to call Missouri’s capital home. Decisions made here ripple across our state.

On August 4, you have an opportunity to help shape those decisions.

Vote.

Vote because someone fought for your right to.

Vote because your neighbors deserve a voice.

Vote because your children are watching.

Vote because stories alone don’t change the world.

People do.

Books are bridges.

Voting decides where those bridges lead.

8,186.

That’s how many books we helped put into readers hands this year.

Eight thousand one hundred eighty-six stories now sitting on nightstands, tucked into backpacks, waiting on coffee tables, or already dog-eared and loved.

Thank you.

Tomorrow, we get to do it again.

And this month, we have a pretty exciting goal…

10,000 books sold in 2026.

We’re only 1,814 books away.

Can we do it in August?

We think so.

Tomorrow is the final day of our Sidewalk Sales. Come hunt for hidden gems, stock up on marked down books, and help us kick off the month with the biggest opening day we’ve had all year.

Let’s make August the month we celebrate five digits together.

Who’s in?

Recently, the Daniel Boone Regional Library came under political pressure for choosing to host a Rainbow Story Time. Public officials threatened funding over the event, turning what should have been a simple story hour into a political battleground.

Here’s where we stand.

We believe libraries and bookstores exist for the same reason:

To make stories accessible.

To help people feel less alone.

To create spaces where curiosity is welcomed instead of feared.

We don’t believe every family has to make the same choices.

We do believe every family should have the freedom to make their own.

Libraries and bookstores have never existed to tell people what they must read.

They exist so people can choose.

If a program isn’t right for your family, you don’t have to attend.

If a book isn’t for you, you don’t have to check it out.

That’s the beauty of libraries.

Choice has always been built into the model.

A child seeing a family that looks like theirs shouldn’t be controversial. Neither should another child learning that families can look different from their own.

Representation doesn’t ask anyone to give up their own story.

It simply says, “There’s room on the shelf for mine, too.”

We believe that books are bridges.

Bridges don’t ask you to abandon where you came from.

They simply make it possible to understand where someone else has been.

That includes q***r readers.
Disabled readers.
Readers of different races, religions, cultures, and identities.
Readers who have spent their whole lives searching for a page that finally says, “You belong here.”

We don’t believe fear should determine what stories are allowed to exist in public spaces.

We believe parents deserve choices.

We believe libraries deserve independence.

And we believe every child deserves the chance to discover that the world is bigger, kinder, and more interesting than they imagined.

Whether that story looks like your family or someone else’s.

Because the goal has never been to make everyone the same.

The goal has always been to make sure everyone knows they belong somewhere.

Thank you State Representative Wick Thomas for using your voice. We are so grateful for you.

To the librarians at Daniel Boone Regional Library: thank you.

Thank you for continuing to do the work, even when that work becomes politicized. Thank you for creating spaces where children are welcomed, where families have choices, and where stories remain accessible to the people who need them.

Books are bridges.

We’ll keep building them.

What if your murder wasn’t the end of your story?

What if you had to watch your family search for you… while your killer walked free?

Missingville blends mystery, suspense, dark humor, and the supernatural into a story that asks what happens after death… when your story isn’t over.

Come meet Christine Kiefer on August 8 and celebrate an exciting new voice in fiction.

Next week is going to be a big one.

52 bookshelves are arriving.

Fifty-two.

Which also means… 52 bookshelves need to be assembled. 😅

We already have a few incredible volunteers lined up (thank you!!), but we’d love to find a few more to help us cross the finish line.

You don’t have to commit to an entire day.

If you have 30 minutes, an hour, or an evening to spare, it makes a difference. Every shelf assembled gets us one step closer to reopening the back room.

Our goal is to have all 52 shelves built by the end of Friday, August 7.

If you’d like to lend a hand, send us a message or comment below, and we’ll coordinate times.

The calendar is FULL…

If you’ve been waiting to plan your next visit, here you go.

Over the next few months, we’ve got author signings, book clubs, Romance Bookstore Day, Banned Books Week, Halloween, pop-ups, midnight releases, community gatherings, and so much more.

A few dates are still marked TBD because we’re putting the final details together, but this is the lineup we’ve been so excited to share.

Vendor applications for our next two MADEBY Pop-Ups will be opening soon! If you’re a maker, artist, author, or small business owner, keep an eye on our pages. We’d love to have you join us!

Save this post. Mark your calendars. Grab your book club bestie.

The second half of the year is going to be a lot of fun.

Everywhere I look, someone is arguing about rankings, rivalries, predictions, and who deserves to win.

Meanwhile, I’m over here rooting for a completely different outcome.

“I hope both teams have fun and the two best players kiss after the game.”

That’s it. That’s the tweet. That’s the lifestyle.

We have these hats in three colors, and I have a feeling they’re going to disappear faster than a referee at the end of a controversial game.

Stop by the shop and grab yours before kickoff… or first pitch… or tipoff… or whatever sport we’re collectively yelling about this week.
