On the bench today is this poor old 1980s Cort Space Bass. It had been abused over the years and on top of the repeated stickerings and spray paintings it had all the frets ripped out. Making a fretted bass into a fretless isn't as easy as just pulling out the frets! Ideally it would get a new fingerboard, but at the least the slots need to be filled to preserve neck stability, and you'll still have the problem of the neck dots being in the wrong place. Filling the slots has it's own problems as you'll almost always still hear a click on slides up the neck, but in this case the budget didn't allow for a whole new fingerboard. On the bench today is my favorite Martin guitar... the legendary HD28. Featuring gorgeous rosewood back and sides and snazzy herringbone binding, the real prize is the scalloped bracing hidden away on the inside. The top on an acoustic guitar is typically crisscrossed with little strips of wood called bracing. They provide strength to the top to keep it flat while under constant stress from over 100 pounds of string tension. With scalloped bracing, the luthier will carve away the bracing to make the top lighter and more resonant but has to make sure not to carve away the strength holding everything together. While it used to be a feature found only on very high-end guitars it has become a lot more common over the past few years, so keep an eye out when you're shopping for your next acoustic! On the bench today is a Yamaha BB bass in for a setup with some LaBella Nylon Tapewound strings. If you're familiar with the difference between roundwound and flatwound strings, then you'll have an idea what it sounds like to go the next level to tapewounds! A steel core wrapped in smooth black nylon wrapping gives you the smoothest, thumpiest sound you can get. It makes a normal fretted bass into an upright bass, and it'll make a fretless into a subsonic thunder machine. Also available for guitar if you really hate treble! Rock and roll ukulele?! On the bench today is a custom job we just finished - turning this eye-catching gold sparkle Kala Brand Music Kala ukulele into a rock and roll monster. We added active electronics and a custom distortion/fuzz circuit, as well as restringing it with low G tuning for more guitar-like voicing. On the bench today is this very rare Alvarez AES100 Successor. Although these days Alvarez only makes acoustic guitars, in the 1980s and 90s they produced some very far out hard rock designs. Instantly recognizable by the huge body cutout and those very cool fingerboard inlays, the AES100 was only in production for about 3 years so if you see one, grab it! On the bench today is another basement find. This beautiful Copley CEB-51 5-string fretless bass from the relatively unknown Nashville based Copley Instruments. It still had the original strings and battery in it, but after a good cleaning and a setup it looks and plays like it's brand new! Currently up for sale at our West Orange shop!

On the bench today is this quirky 1970 Aria 1532T. A classic 1960s Japanese retro design built in the famous Matsumoko guitar factory. Matsumoko also built guitars for Epiphone, Ibanez, Yamaha, and many others, and their funky Aria designs, build quality, and pickups are highly regarded among players and collectors. This one was rescued from the back corner of a basement and was literally held together with duct tape. Now fully restored, all original, and up for sale in our West Orange shop!

On the bench today, we build custom guitars! The Flipout guitar I posted recently got so much attention I thought I'd post a custom guitar that I made years ago for a show. This is a completely right handed guitar made from a left handed body and neck. It balances surprisingly well and never fails to confuse anyone who sees it. On the bench today is a pretty uncommon old Mercury acoustic guitar made by The Jackson-Guldan Violin Company in the 1950s. Once the largest (and only) manufacturer of violins in the USA, they expanded into acoustic guitars in the 1940s which were built in their factory in Columbus, Ohio. Very similar in construction to Harmony guitars of the era. Now open for guitar and string instrument repair of all kinds in West Orange, NJ

Why do some hollowbody electric guitars like this 1972 Framus Atlantik 6 have F-holes? It started when people started electrifying acoustic guitars that already had the arch top/F-hole shape and it just became tradition - but it can also help the guitar resonate more openly, provide more unplugged volume, and for people like me, make it much easier to get the electronics in and out for repair! It can add more feedback at higher volumes, which is why if you look closely at B.B. King's famous "Lucille" guitar you'll see the F-hole is actually a decal. And if you look closely you'll see that this Framus doesn't actually have an F-hole either it's just a decal too! Now open for guitar repair of all kinds, no matter how holy they are.
