On the bench today is this poor old 1980s Cort Space Bass. It had been abused over the years and on top of the repeated stickerings and spray paintings it had all the frets ripped out. Making a fretted bass into a fretless isn't as easy as just pulling out the frets! Ideally it would get a new fingerboard, but at the least the slots need to be filled to preserve neck stability, and you'll still have the problem of the neck dots being in the wrong place. Filling the slots has it's own problems as you'll almost always still hear a click on slides up the neck, but in this case the budget didn't allow for a whole new fingerboard.
