ANOTHER SALSA GIANT HAS PASSED! Trombonist, singer, actor, and activist Willie Colon has passed away at the age of 75. Born in the South Bronx to Puerto Rican parents, he was signed to Fania Records at age 15, and recorded his first album at 17, which ultimately sold more than 300,000 copies. The main record producer at Fania at the time, Johnny Pacheco, recommended Héctor Lavoe to him. Beyond the trombone, Colon also worked as a composer, arranger, and singer, and eventually as a producer and director. Combining elements of jazz, rock, and salsa, his influence on ALL forms of popular music was massive.
