JUNE IS MEN'S MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH 💜

AFTER JUNE 19, 1865 ⚫️🔴🟢
CROWNSVILLE STATE HOSPITAL
Crownsville, MD

Known as The Hospital for the Negro Insane of Maryland.
It was operated in Crownsville, MD from 1911 to 2004.

It was infamous for being one of the country's last segregated mental assylums, where underfunded, overcrowded, conditions, and systematic neglect defined the tragic reality for thousands of Black patients. [Wikipedia]

NOTES & FACTS TO PONDER;
■ It was a MENTAL HOSPITAL FOR FREED SLAVES.
This was AFTER JUNE 19, 1865.
■ MENTAL ILLNESS WENT ON A RISE after the freedom of the enslaved. After being "freed" they were left to deal with trauma from being abused, mistreated, and being oppressed & enslaved.
■ Crownsville State Hospital started by whyte men from the Jim Crow era who wanted to have a place for the mentally ill enslaved but they didn't want to pay for it being built. They gathered 12 BLACK MEN, who were dealing with mental illness themselves, & made them go out clear the land, and build the hospital and then live in it. 12 BLACK MENTALLY ILL MEN built the Crownsville State Hospital.
■ It was said that the enslaved people were more "sane" as slaves than they were as "freed" men & women.
■ The outside of the mental assylum was 500 acres of land with to***co fields, gardens, & cattle fields. The former enslaved people, the Black patients, tended to these fields as if they were still "enslaved".
■ The inside of the facility had no beds, no decency, no kindness to it whatsoever.
■ The Black patients were treated as a number & used as guinea pigs for scientific purposes. After they died, they were buried in graves only marked with numbers .
■ 1700 bodies were buried on the grounds of this facility Some of the bodies went missing. They were sold to be "studied".
■ Crownsville State Hospital closed in 2004.

❤️ A community of people are working on getting names put on the unmarked graves. Every year there is a ceremony held to honor the memory of the lives that were buried on the grounds. The annual celebration is called "Say My Name."

I gathered this information from a documentary that I watched called "Juneteenth: The Story of Unity & Reconciliation (YouTube) 🟥

JUNETEENTH PART 2 🤎🌿🌿🌿

ABOUT THE JUNETEENTH FLAG....
THIS IS THE REAL FLAG THAT REPRESENTS JUNETEENTH

The Juneteenth flag
was designed in 1997 by Activist Ben Haith.
Every part of the Juneteenth flag is symbolic.
[This information is from Google] 💥

COLORS:
RED🔴, WHITE⚪️BLUE🔵
The colors were deliberately chosen, matching the American flag. This was to symbolize that the enslaved people & their descendants were always Americans, possessing inherent rights to citizenship.

THE CENTER STAR:
Represents Texas (The Lone Star State) where the last enslaved ppl were finally freed on June 19, 1865. It also stands for the freedom of Black Americans in all 50 states.

THE BURST:
The outline encircling the star resembles a nova (new star) in space. It signifies a brand new beginning & fresh opportunities for African Americans.

THE ARC:
The sweeping curve cutting across the flag represents a "new horizon", symbolizing the promising futures & opportunities that lay ahead.

JUNETEENTH PART 1 🤎🌿🌿🌿

AFTER FREEDOM DAY....
When the enslaved people were finally informed of their freedom, they were KILLED, HUNG, SOUGHT AFTER...CHASED DOWN by the slave owners and the people that benefitted grately from the work of the enslaved people. Imagine working hard from sun up to sun down. Imagine the oppression, the abuse, the hatred they endured. Imagine the struggle they went through, all while not knowing that they were actually FREE from being enslaved for 2 1/2 years prior. 🤨

It was said that 2 things could have possibly happened....

1. The messenger that was sent to give the news about the freedom of the enslaved people was KILLED so that the news wouldn't reach the people.

2. The oppressors/slave owners knew all along and kept it to themselves in order to keep their economy, crops, etc flowing. In other words...they didn't want to loose the benefits of slavery.

JUNETEENTH 🖤
It's more than a "big cookout"...
it's about the resilience of a great people. ✊🏽
