Handcrafted FCD Midwest made, thoughtfully curated goods + alteration shop. I am always on the lookout for a new way to help my wonderful customers live their lives in style.

Handcrafted FCD started out with the desire for a stylish tote to carry all my teaching ‘stuff’ back and forth to school. It quickly expanded as friends and family realized they had many uses for reversible totes in colorful patterns. Over the years, in addition to our original Reversible Totes, our product list has grown to include Clutches, Zipper Pouches, Cosmetic Bags, Wallets, and so much more! My newest love is working with canvas and leathers mixed with stylish prints. I am so blessed to have the opportunity to share my love of sewing and handmade products with you! Christmas has arrived at Handcrafted FCD, and our shelves are smelling AMAZING! 🤍✨

We're excited to share the Christmas collection from Dirt Road Candle Co., a handmade candle and home fragrance company founded by Michelle in 2016.

The story behind Dirt Road Candle Co. is one we love. After Michelle and her husband bought their dream farm on a dirt road, she began experimenting with making her own candles. She loved the way a candle could make a home feel cozy and inviting — and, well, farm life with beloved cows sometimes comes with a few smells you don't necessarily want inside! 😂🐄

What began as a love for candles grew into something more. Today, Michelle and her team handcraft products on their farm, from quality candles to hand soaps, car freshies, and other good-smelling favorites.

But what we appreciate most is the heart behind the business. Michelle shares that making connections with customers is what it's all about, and we love supporting makers who put so much care into what they create. 🤎

🌾 SUNDAY REFLECTION | Trusting His Timing 🤎🙏

My heart has been especially with farmers this week as they work long hours bringing in the harvest.

We prayed for rain so the crops could grow, and then, in some areas, we received so much that it delayed getting into the fields. Once the fields finally dry out and you get started, something breaks down. And somehow, those breakdowns always seem to happen at the worst possible time… usually right when you open up a field and are ready to go! 🚜

Farming has a way of reminding us just how little we truly control.

We can prepare the ground, plant the seed, care for the soil, watch the weather, repair the equipment, and work from sunup well past sundown. But we cannot control the rain, the timing, or the unexpected things that interrupt our plans.

We can work hard, make plans, and do our very best — while still trusting God with what we cannot control.

My husband farms, and the land we work has been in my family for more than 125 years. That history is not something we take lightly. We feel a responsibility to care for this soil, just as the generations before us did, so we can one day pass it along to our children and their children.

There is something sacred about that kind of stewardship. We aren't just raising a crop for this season. We're caring for something that has been entrusted to our family, with the hope that it will continue to bless generations to come.

And in the middle of the delays, the breakdowns, the long days, and the uncertainty, God is still faithful. His timing doesn't always match ours, and His provision doesn't always look the way we expected. But we can keep trusting Him, even when the road ahead feels frustrating or uncertain.

I'm thankful for His provision, for His protection, and for the reminder that we are never carrying the weight of it all alone.

🙏 A prayer for our farmers: Lord, please watch over every farmer working in the fields right now. Protect them as they work long hours, often in the dark and when they're physically exhausted. Give them wisdom, patience, strength, and safe equipment. Bring them home safely to the families waiting for them. Bless the work of their hands, provide what they need, and remind them of Your presence in the middle of the long days. Amen.

To all the farm families working hard to bring in this year's crop: we're praying for you. May you find moments of rest, reasons for gratitude, and peace in trusting God's timing. 🌾🤎

🌎 THROWBACK THURSDAY | Homeschooling: Learning Beyond the Classroom

🪨 From ancient symbols carved into volcanic rock to a place connected to one of the most significant scientific and historical events of modern times… New Mexico gave us quite a contrast in history!

On our road trip last month, we visited Petroglyph National Monument and a Manhattan Project historic site. Two very different places, each offering an opportunity to pause, explore, and ask questions about the people who came before us.

At Petroglyph National Monument, we saw ancient petroglyphs etched into volcanic rock—markings left by people generations ago. It makes you wonder about the stories they were telling, what mattered to them, and what they hoped to leave behind.

Then we explored a site connected to the Manhattan Project, learning about a much more recent chapter of history and the scientific discoveries that changed the world. It’s a complicated part of our past, full of questions about science, decisions, and consequences.

I love that homeschooling gives us the flexibility to experience these places in person. We can read the information, study the displays, talk through our questions, and take the time to really think about what we're seeing.

History isn't just a list of dates to memorize. It's people, choices, discoveries, cultures, and stories that continue to shape the world we live in today.

These are the moments when learning stretches beyond the textbook and becomes something we can see, explore, and remember.

Sometimes the best stories start with the smallest seeds!

In 1965, in the Amish community of Berne, Indiana, Roy Lehman planted a small plot of popcorn for his six-year-old son, Brian. What began as a childhood hobby quickly grew into something much bigger. Brian started growing popcorn for family and friends, even bringing it to school for his sixth-grade teacher, one of his first loyal customers!

After graduation, Brian stayed on the family farm and continued growing and selling popcorn. That little hobby eventually became Amish Country Popcorn, a family business that now harvests roughly 10 million pounds of popcorn each year and sells around the world. 🌎🍿

But what really drew me to this company is the heart behind it. ❤️

Amish Country Popcorn is committed to growing quality popcorn that is GMO-free and preservative-free, using practices like crop rotation and natural growing methods. Much of the popcorn is grown right on the family farm, with additional crops coming from local farmers who are carefully managed to maintain quality.

And there’s another part of Brian’s story that means a lot to me: his faith. 🙏

Those who know Brian say he is known for two things: serving the Lord and selling popcorn. His life goal is to tell people everywhere how to get to heaven. I love supporting businesses where the story behind the product reflects the values that matter to the people who create it.

🪡 BEHIND THE SEAMS TUESDAY: If Only It Went This Fast! 🤍

Imagine if bridal alterations really happened as quickly as this video! 😂

This time-lapse shows me sewing covered buttons down the back of a wedding gown. It may look like a small detail, but there's more to it than meets the eye. The buttons need to be sourced, prepared, and carefully sewn on—one at a time. And that's just one piece of the alteration process!

Here's something every bride should know: even when you order your wedding dress in your size, it may still need adjustments to fit you just right.

During your fitting, we'll assess what your gown needs, including:
🪡 Hemming the dress to the right length
🪡 Adjusting straps and the bodice
🪡 Creating a bustle for your train
🪡 Adding personal touches, like covered buttons
🪡 Making other adjustments to help your gown feel uniquely yours

And brides, here's your permission to ask questions! 🤍

Thinking, “Could we add this?” or “I'd love it if we could change that…” Tell me! If it's possible for your gown, let's talk about how we can bring your vision to life.

Just remember that custom details take planning. Sourcing the right materials and completing the work takes time, so the earlier we discuss your ideas, the better!

👠 One very important fitting reminder: PLEASE bring your wedding shoes! Your heel height helps determine where your hem needs to fall. Those shoes have an important job long before you walk down the aisle!

Once we've pinned your gown, discussed the adjustments, and agreed on the plan, your dress stays with us while I get to work bringing all those details together.

It's a process that takes time, precision, and a whole lot of little stitches—but those details are what help make your wedding dress feel like your dress. ✨

Today we’re spotlighting Nixon and Norman, an Iowa-based handmade sewing and gift shop created by maker Tiffany Read in Prole, Iowa! ✨

Tiffany creates the sweetest handmade fabric and felt toys inspired by Montessori-style play, along with adorable dolls and pretend-play food sets that encourage little imaginations to run wild. 🧸🍪

Reflection Sunday | The Character of God 🤍

Lately, our Sunday School class has been studying Romans, and as we worked through chapter 2, we spent time reflecting on God’s kindness, forbearance, and patience (Romans 2:4).

One thing that stood out to me was how these qualities remind us of God’s work in our past, present, and future.

His kindness reminds us of the grace He has already shown us. His forbearance reminds us of His patience with us right where we are today. And His patience reminds us that He continues to give us time and opportunity to turn toward Him.

We also talked about repentance—and how it is more than simply acknowledging the things we’ve done wrong. True repentance means turning away from sin and turning toward God.

And here’s something I think we sometimes struggle with: we expect to feel forgiven before we can believe we are forgiven.

But our feelings are not the foundation of God’s promises.

We cannot put God in a box or decide how His forgiveness must feel in order for it to be real. God is just and righteous. Sin matters, repentance matters, and grace is not permission to continue in sin. But because of Jesus Christ, forgiveness is available to us.

Our assurance rests not in our ability to manufacture a feeling, but in the character of God and the finished work of Christ.

What a gift it is that God’s kindness leads us toward repentance—not shame that keeps us hiding from Him, but grace that calls us to turn back to Him.

“Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?” — Romans 2:4 (KJV)

My prayer for this Sunday is that we would stop measuring God’s forgiveness by our feelings and instead rest in the truth of who He is. May His kindness draw us closer, His patience humble us, and His grace continually turn our hearts toward Him.
