September 6, 1970: Jimi Hendrix Played His Final Concert

On September 6, 1970, Jimi Hendrix took the stage at the Love & Peace Festival on the Isle of Fehmarn in West Germany for what would become the final full concert of his life.

Hendrix had originally been scheduled to perform the previous day, but severe weather forced his appearance to be postponed. With Billy Cox and Mitch Mitchell beside him, he finally took the stage on Sunday and performed a set spanning “Killing Floor,” “All Along the Watchtower,” “Hey Joe,” “Foxy Lady,” “Red House,” “Purple Haze” and more.

He closed with “Voodoo Child (Slight Return).” Twelve days later, on September 18, Jimi Hendrix died in London at the age of 27. A performance that had simply been another stop on his European tour became one of the most poignant final concerts in rock history.
