While many of us spent 2022 trying to get our lives back to some kind of normal, Melbourne shutterbugs Brooke Zanco and Em Jensen set off to explore two magical parts of the Australian outback.

Brooke, a biologist, headed west to capture various desert landscapes and their precious ecosystems. Meanwhile, Em travelled to the rural New South Wales town of Broken Hill, where she documented the unique community and their stories.

For those of you who were keen to hit the road this summer, but didn’t quite make it out of your local suburb, you might find comfort in these snaps by Western Australian photographer Ashlen Faith.

Her ‘Desert Highway’ series, Hot and Dusty and Going North, feature everything you’d see during a road trip across the country: vast, red landscapes; quirky old servos; native flora and fauna; and of course, long – often empty – highways. Ah, our feet are getting itchy just thinking about it.

To spy more of Ashlen’s sun-drenched snaps take a scroll through her Instagram.

gaze at tom thiercelin’s sunny snaps of sésimbra
Sésimbra has white, sandy beaches that are packed with holidaymakers and rows and rows of colourful umbrellas, plus plenty of picturesque, rocky coastline. Ahh, we can smell the salty air and feel the warm sun shining down on our sufficiently sunscreened faces from here. To see more of Tom’s photography (including an equally lovely series shot in Greece), swing past his website.

British shutterbug Jo Broughton was a teenage art student in the ‘90s when she turned up for work experience at what turned out to be a khm studio (thanks to an awkward administrative error at her college). She spent the next few years doing odd jobs for the studio – even living there for a time – while processing her mixed feelings about the world through behind-the-scenes journal entries, drawings and photographs.

There’s a bear in there, and a bear in there, and another bear in there… OK, you get the gist.

Dmitry Kokh was making his way through Kolyuchin Island, Russia, last year when he spotted a few large, clawed, furry chaps hanging out the windows of an abandoned building.

Since Dmitry happens to be a super-talented wildlife photographer, the sight of a few friendly (and only slightly deadly) polar bears left him feeling absolutely chuffed. So, he whipped out his camera and took some incredible snaps. The shutterbug says the experience was a "once-in-a-lifetime situation", and we tend to agree.

Have a gander at Dmitry’s website to see more of his impressive photographs, and peep his work in action below.

How good are these sculptures by Thirza Schaap? The Dutch lass has been turning discarded plastic into art and photographing it for her Plastic Ocean series since 2017.

While Thirza’s works are often pastel-hued, perfectly composed and pretty, the meaning behind them is grim. “Plastic Ocean questions consumption, idolatry and what it is we value in our lives today,” she says. “Our beaches are covered in plastic confetti and there really is nothing to celebrate.”

Keep an eye on her Instagram for more of her rad work. https://www.instagram.com/thirzaschaap/

Most of us have seen images of formerly grandiose (and now kind of creepy) abandoned buildings before. These dark, dank, decaying buildings usually look like they belong in a horror film. What happens, though, when the dishevelled structures are converted into gyms, markets and grocery stores instead?

The work of French photographers Yves Marchand and Romain Meffre answers this.

Why was food from the ’70s so odd? Back then, it was acceptable to encase everything in gelatine – including entire salads – and to present gross meats as if they were a dessert. Folks absolutely loved arranging their meals to look more like sculptures than, well, meals (we would all be using eggplants as vases, if the folks behind The Fine Art of Garnishing had their way), and eggs and platters were all the rage.

This Instagram account presents these retro food trends and more in all their gelatinous, elaborately-garnished glory. https://www.instagram.com/weirdoldfood/

Is there any better way to start your morning than by watching the sky fill up with soft hues of pastel pink, orange and purple? Quietly soaking up the sunrise is an instant mood-booster and serves as a reminder that this floating rock we live on is a truly magical place. Basking in a golden sunset is just as lovely.

If getting up at the crack of dawn or stepping out into the evening cold doesn’t sound like your idea of a good time, then simply gaze at these incredible snaps by Colorado photographer Alex Burke to get your fix.

Flowers + Buildings. The concept may be simple, but Valentin Cheli and Joppe Muller’s aptly named photo series is far from boring. The Berlin-based photographers held pretty blooms in front of their lens while shooting structures made of concrete, bricks and metal – the kind you'd find in any old city – and we’re mighty impressed by the effect. (It's making us wonder if we should start carrying bouquets in front of our eyes to brighten up even the dullest of views.)

Scroll through Paris-born, Abu Dhabi-based photographer Aude Delannoy Dib’s Instagram grid and you’ll likely find yourself with a severe case of itchy feet. Whether in Dubai, Venice, Jordan or Kyoto, the globetrotting shutterbug’s snaps are perfectly composed and bursting with colour (and make us a smidge jealous, if we’re being honest).
