The Legend of the Shoal Creek monster
@
Picture this: September 1975. I was 11 years old, living just a quarter mile from the low water bridge down by Shoal Creek, when the Shoal Creek Monster turned our quiet corner of the Ozarks upside down.
It all started the night a local kid threw his car straight into a ditch, swearing a seven-foot, hair-matted terror smelling of absolute rot had lunged out of the dark timber right in front of his headlights.
For one wild week, absolute panic gripped the neighborhood. Sightings flooded in from everywhere, the woods behind our houses were locked down, and armed posses and deputies swarmed the area with flashlights and ri**es. My friend and I had to walk to school right through the thick of it, armed with a brutally honest survival plan: if that thing came out of the tree line at us, we were tripping her big sister and running for our lives!
They finally caught the kid pulling the hoax in his suit, but the legend was already waiting in the dark long before anyone ever put on a costume. Even today, people up around Paintball Ridge still swear they see things moving in the timber.
When you live a quarter mile from the bridge, you never quite forget how fast those woods can turn on you. 🌲👀
