🧄 GARLIC PLANTING BY ZONE — SAVE THIS FALL GUIDE!

If you want garlic next summer, fall is planting season across much of the country.

But don't choose your planting date simply because someone in another state says, “Plant garlic now!”

Your climate matters.

🧄 COLDER ZONES

Gardeners in colder climates generally plant earlier in fall because winter arrives sooner. You want cloves to begin establishing roots before the ground freezes hard, without producing excessive tender growth.

🧄 MIDDLE ZONES

October into November is a common garlic-planting period in many areas, but weather and soil conditions should guide you more than the calendar alone.

🧄 WARMER ZONES

Gardeners with mild winters can often plant considerably later. In the warmest climates, selecting a garlic variety adapted to mild winters becomes especially important. Some growers may also need to provide pre-plant chilling depending on their climate and variety.

🌱 HARDNECK OR SOFTNECK?

Hardneck garlic generally performs particularly well where winters are cold and also produces those delicious garlic scapes.

Softneck garlic is commonly grown in milder climates and generally stores longer.

There are exceptions, so choose varieties recommended for your region rather than relying only on your USDA zone.

🧄 HOW TO PLANT

Separate the bulb into individual cloves shortly before planting.

Choose the largest healthy cloves.

Plant each clove with the POINTED END UP and the root end down.

A common guideline is to set cloves about 2 inches deep and roughly 4–6 inches apart, adjusting for your soil and local growing recommendations.

Garlic likes fertile, well-drained soil and plenty of sun.

One important note about zone charts: USDA Hardiness Zones are based primarily on average annual extreme minimum winter temperatures. They don't tell you everything about fall weather, soil temperature or your first freeze.

So use the zone guide as a STARTING POINT, then adjust for your local conditions.
