Part 2: The Fervor Years

Fervor means ardor, passion, zeal - and we three had that in spades. What we didn’t have was any retail or business experience. 😬

I think what helped me most with that lack of knowledge was that I had learned to talk to and to appreciate every sort of person imaginable during my five years of hell and glory selling books out West (door-to-door, 80 hours a week) during college summers. Yes, I was one of THOSE people. 🙃 Oh the things I experienced, but I also learned that most people are pretty great when we give each other a chance, which can be a valuable thing to remember on bad days in retail.

Not too far into our Fervor adventure, first Karen, and then Elaine each figured out that the retail thing wasn’t for them. They stayed on as consignment artists, and I started bringing in more artists to round out our offering. Some names might ring a bell - Fran Dwight, Conrad Kauffman, Lisa Olivarez, Tonya Nielsen, Coco Sweeney, and Cathy Green.

Art Hops were at their first-round of peak in those days. Each Hop was like a big party, and our buffet always featured my mom’s amazing hummus and her mango salsa. So many people clamored for her recipes that she made a cookbook (see the pic). 😊

These were the years that our very first manager Diandra made her appearance (and never left my heart!). We would all continue the party at the Union afterword - now days I can barely make it to 9, haha. Oh how things change.

Back to the part about having no retail experience…I basically fumbled my way through every mistake that a new business owner could make, but nothing beats natural consequences when it comes to teaching a lesson. 🙃

I also did a lot of things right, as it turned out, and we soon needed to expand into a second space. But that’s for part 3, later in the week. In the meantime I probably ought to show you some cool stuff we’ve been getting in!

Images include: A couple views from inside Fervor, a pic of me from the Gazette, a pic of Elaine, and somehow the only picture of Karen I can find! Also, a picture of my very first staff (Diandra in glasses), and my mom‘s amazing cookbook!

The Origin Story

I moved back to Kalamazoo from San Francisco in 2001, where I had discovered an obsession with jewelry making. I launched my wholesale Amy Zane Jewelry business out of a studio in the Park Trades Center, and was as surprised as my (initially very skeptical but eternally supportive) parents at how fast it grew.

One day while visiting Sylvia Steeg at Oggi the Gift Shop, she said, “Why don’t you open up your own shop?” I think a visible lightbulb may have appeared over my head. 🙃 I dashed over to see a spot in the Mall Plaza that was open, and decided that day that I was all-in. The Aries was strong in me those days. 🐏

I told my Park Trades neighbor and costume and clothing designer Elaine Kaufman, and she loved the idea. Soon Karen Matson and her very cool handbags became our third, and Fervor was born.

Many of you might remember our famous pottery floor with some gorgeous stained glass scenes thrown in. That was quite the undertaking, made even more unique with a few guest artists adding in their personal flare. It was unfortunately torn out to make a parking garage in later years, but it made so many people happy while it lasted. Check it out in the pic of Elaine (left) and me (right).

I don’t remember exactly when we opened in 2003, but we felt very supported by the community immediately, even though our location was pretty tucked away. I was awed by the response, and my love for Kalamazoo was officially official and would only grow over time. ❤️

One of our wonderful local artists was recently surprised to learn that we represent over 100 Kalamazoo-area artists, and said, “You really should let people know that!” And at first I thought, “Doesn’t everyone already know?”

Then I remembered we’ve been around a long while now and have perhaps become lax on letting our tons of new customers know what we have always been all about!

So look for my upcoming series of posts detailing our roots, our various transformations - and how very far we’ve come the past 23 years (25 for Amy Zane Jewelry!)!

Lucky for us, the wonderful Michael Haughey just can’t stop creating, and our walls (and hopefully yours sometime soon!) are the beneficiaries! Come see them in person - his work often doesn’t stick around for long before it finds its forever home.
