There’s an important election coming up, and if you’re eligible to vote but are not yet registered, there’s only a few days left to sign up. Please do! In both Kansas and Missouri it’s possible to register online to vote; in most cases you just need the information on your driver’s license.

While the official day of the election is Tuesday, November 3, Kansas and Missouri both make it pretty easy to vote early, too. Once you’re registered, your county probably has multiple locations where you can vote ahead of time if you’ll be busy or out of town on November 3, or even if you just feel like getting your vote in early.

And here at Flagship, on Thursday October 15, we’ll be hosting Postcards Against Authoritarianism - it’s a spinoff of the Poems Against Authoritarianism writing workshops we’ve been doing for the last year or so, and this time we’ll be sending out postcards reminding our friends and family members to vote. We’ll have some postcards, art supplies, and stamps you can use, but if you have materials you want to contribute, you’re more than welcome to bring them!

Today’s arrivals include 𝗡𝗼 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, a brand new book about the Kansas postpunk scene in the 80s and 90s; a restock of 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 by Kansas City-based author Kenan Orhan that was recently longlisted for the Booker Prize (it’s excellent!); and another restock of this book about pawpaws that we’ve suddenly been selling a lot of 🤔

We’re also starting to set up our Halloween displays with lots of classic & contemporary spooky stories for both kids & grownups.

Last night, Flagship got to partner with the KCK public library, selling books at an event with local author Angela Cervantes. Angela has written twelve popular children’s books, including 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘭𝘦𝘯 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 𝘊𝘶𝘱 𝘛𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘺, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘔𝘰𝘰𝘯, and 𝘔𝘦, 𝘍𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘢, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘦𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘰𝘤𝘬 𝘙𝘪𝘯𝘨. At last night’s event, Angela told us all about her latest book, 𝘙𝘢𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘭 𝘙𝘦𝘺𝘦𝘴 𝘚𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘦𝘥𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨, which is part of the American Girl doll collection. Raquel Reyes is the 2026 American doll of the year, and her character lives in Kansas City! Angela talked about her writing process, the experience of working with American Girl, and some of the details from her own life growing up in Kansas City that she worked into Raquel’s character and stories. We sold out of all of Angela’s books last night, but we’ll have more in stock next week!

The community art table that we had at Flagship for a few weeks ended up raising over $1200 for AIRR’s emergency fund to support local families impacted by ICE detentions. Thank you so much to everyone who purchased art or donated, and to all of the artists who donated art to sell, including Bird Barnes, Chico Sierra, Tara Mason, Ty Melgren, Xiao Faria daCunha, and more.

If you want to support the good work that AIRR is doing but haven’t had a chance to buy something from the art table, we do still have a few small pieces left at the bookstore, or you could always donate directly to Advocates for Immigrant Rights and Reconciliation (AIRR).
