Summer fades. Its green sugars already curing into savory browns. 4th of July get-togethers, the road trips are in its rearview mirror. Time to double down on grill outs, new poetry and easy tunes by the pool. There’s a new issue of the OrphanAGE to lay down the law. [one of our fave’s to date — then again, each issue is one if our faves… 😎) :

does the touch, the mark of an author or historical figure more firmly anchor a work in time and space? Whatever the philosophical POV, they are pretty damned cool!**

Mein Kampf by Adolph — 1939 signed by a German civil Burgermeister — in German! Our guess is that they were issued to loyalists by the Fuhrer and the party. A truly historical artifact

“Guests of the Ayatollah” by Mark Bowden [“Black Hawk Down” & “Killing Pablo” ] — signed by the author AND two of the American Hostages

Bette Bao Lord’s “Legacies: A Chinese Mosaic” with a typed & signed letter by the author to Mrs Kemper

As well as signed work by: Jean Auel / Michael Beschloss / Amy Poehler / Stephanie Meyer [Twighlight] / Dumbauld’s “Jefferson, American Tourist” and / “Greatest Submarine Stories” by Underwood.

** The study of history and the all to often uncomfortableness of what it contains can be both important, and vital and ‘cool’. Its attendant artifacts, the tactile record, left behind can also be ‘cool’. Even as the millennia-long incarnation, the actual acts of horror and atrocity that make up so much of human history are not very ‘cool’. The word ‘cool’, the modifier of ‘they’ in the post, could be better read as ‘fascinating’ or ‘important’.
