🚴♂️ Recommended Bicycle Maintenance Interval 🚴♀️🚴♀️
👍We are asked these questions almost every day 🛞
Service intervals vary based on riding conditions, mileage, weather, and bike type, and rider strength, these are good general guidelines for a multi-speed bicycle.
🚴♀️A well-maintained multi-speed bicycle can provide decades of reliable service.
🪛 Service Item 🪛 🔧Recommended Interval🔧
Tire pressure check - Before every ride, the most common reason for punctures is low pressure
Chain lubrication - Every 100–150 miles (160–240 km), or after riding in rain. Use a drip-type lubricant application (especially with disc brakes)
Clean drivetrain - Every 200–500 miles (320–800 km), or after riding in extreme dusty or muddy conditions
Check brakes and shifting - That happens just by riding the bike; take note how the bike is shifting and how the brakes feel
Inspect wheels and tires - Monthly (at a minimum)
Measure chain wear - Every 500–1,000 miles (800–1,600 km)
Hub, headset, and bottom bracket service - Every 1–2 years, more often in wet or dusty conditions or for high-mileage ridersger riders wear out chains faster
Replace cassette and chainrings - As wear dictates
Replace brake pads - When worn; inspect every 6 months
Replace cables and housing - Annually or when shifting/braking degrades
Wheel truing and spoke tension check - As needed
Hub, headset, and bottom bracket service - Every 1–2 years, more often in wet or dusty conditions or for high-mileage riders
A professional tune-up once every couple of years or as needed
🛞For gravel and mountain bikes🚴♂️
If you're riding in mud, extreme dust, water crossings, or events like Unbound Gravel, cut many of these intervals in half. A muddy or extremely dusty ride will require:
• Immediate bike wash
• Drivetrain cleaning and lubrication
• Drivetrain wear check
🛞For occasional casual riders🚴♀️
Even if mileage is low, plan on:
• Chain lubrication every few months
• Check tire pressure before every ride, all bicycle tire loses air overtime
• A professional tune-up once every couple of years or as needed.
