Big swells bring shells and other interesting stuff!

Shown here are majority of my finds. Not shown are: half of a fishing reel, bodyboard leash, empty anti-freeze jug, penny and poi pounder. All but poi pounder were removed from water.

When I’m in the water, I don’t often find jewelry. Most often, I find fish hooks, lead, fishing line, glass shards, surf tumbled sea glass…and of course, seashells. However, in past week I’ve found a bracelet, gold earring and a couple of loose gemstones. So random!

I was happy to find puka shells and surprised to score several chunky sea glass pieces! Definitely unexpected…

Vintage, Niihau momi shells in deep rose lavender, blush pink to cream hues. These were strands were made last year; I was happy with gradient colors, ombré hues. But, I set it aside until I found perfect puka shells to serve as bead caps. Months later, I’ve finally found pukas I’m happy with - striking, bright white pukas to contrast and complement ombré hues!

Years ago, a dear friend gifted me these vintage Niihau shells (gathered in 1980’s to early 1990’s.) Some had already been prepped/poked, but never strung into lei. For years, I’d wanted to create something with them. So, I stranded, de-stranded…Made some, sold some, yet most sat unfinished and temporarily forgotten.

Recently, I was motivated to unearth unfinished projects and in doing so, I found out I have a LOT! Time to git ‘er done! Anyways, I can’t be the only maker who has an ungodly amount of unfinished projects laying around. Maybe, this post will inspire you to look through your cache of unfinished projects, too…😘

In October, I strung these vintage Niihau shells to make a pair of earrings. However, I am still on the fence about metals to use. (Yeah, I might overthink things sometimes.)

Do you think yellow gold or sterling silver would better complement shells? Would love to hear your feedback!

Mahalo (thank you)! 🌺

There were so many people beachcombing, yet no one noticed these beautiful kūpee (polished nerites)! Guess they were meant for me. ☺️💕Super stoked about it, because I love these particular hues. 🎉🎊l

If you’re wondering what my method is for finding shells, I really don’t have one…Also, I don’t follow belief you need to be at beach early to find good stuff. Not. True. I just roll up whenevers. 😂

However, there are habits I keep (religiously) when I look for shells. I pick up beach trash as I walk beach. If I’m in water, I carry my knife (sometimes a scissors, too) to cut/remove fishing line/hooks/lead from reef. (There’s a hella mess of fishing lines on our reefs!) Also, if I find live sea creatures on beach, I bring them back to water. (So, if you see me on beach talking to something in my hand - mind yo’ business!😆)

Shello there! Now, that I’ve got your attention…I know, it’s been a while since I last posted. Months, in fact! I’m still here doin’ my thing, beach combing, creating, supporting fellow makers and celebrating with you on your successes. I just don’t post as much or as often. Lol.

Anywho, don’t you love these little Hebrew cones? I do! (Yeah, ok…I do love Hebrew cones, BUT only the small ones. 😬)

Swipe left for size references. Enjoy the views!

May I ask your assistance in identifying this conus species? I’ve included multiple views to help with identification. It was collected in waters off Kauai, Hawaii. Thank you for your consideration.
