Here's a little background on the inspiration:
On the surface, it looks like a clean Scandinavian inspired Dunk,

But the concept is actually built upon the argument that Finnish architect Alvar Aalto inadvertently helped shape the future of skateboarding long before skateboarding existed.

Aalto is Finland’s most influential modernist architect and designer. Unlike many modernists who favored rigid geometric forms, Aalto embraced organic curves, natural materials, and nature inspired architecture.

His work emphasized flow instead of symmetry.

::: THE SKATEBOARDING CONNECTION :::

In the late 1920’s, Aalto began experimenting with thin layers of birch wood veneers, glued together, treated, and then bent with pressure to create permanent curves. Those experiments would lead to stronger, lighter, and more flexible furniture. Example: Paimio Chair

Cut to today, modern skateboards are made in a strikingly similar way!!! 

Then, in 1939, Aalto designed the Villa Mairea,

a private residence that featured one of the very first documented free form swimming pools, the kidney-shaped pool

Years later, Thomas Church, an American landscape architect, inspired by Aalto’s designs,

started incorporating similar flowing pools into California residential architecture.

Fast forward to the 1970’s where droughts led to those same pools emptied…

That evolution led directly to pool skating, to vert skating, and now to the modern transition skating that we see today!

The Beyond Dunk is less about celebrating a single architect,

and more about recognizing how design and architecture unexpectedly intersected with skateboarding.

::: HOW THE SHOE REFLECTS THE WORK :::

-Birch colored Swoosh - references Aalto’s birch furniture

-Red outsole - inspired by the red brick used in his buildings

-Blue patent leather heel - references the glazed ceramic tiles found in several of his projects (pool tiles!)

-White upper - reflects Scandinavian minim
