Back to school for our fifth-generation fishermen đâ¤ď¸
For most kids, summer vacation means sleeping in, long days at the lake, and taking a break from the everyday routine. For a fishermanâs kids, summer looks a little different. Their days are shaped by tides, salmon runs, early mornings, long days on the beach, and plenty of hard work.
And they wouldnât have it any other way.
I was raised on this same beach, working alongside my Mom and Dad and learning from a young age what it means to be part of this way of life. Some of my favorite memories are the ones made right here, working hard, being together, and learning lessons that had nothing to do with a classroom.
Watching our own children grow up here and now seeing our three grandchildren work alongside us is something I never take for granted. There is something pretty special about watching the fifth generation learn the same lessons we did so many years ago.
They know that long days are part of it. They know that hard work matters. They know there is pride in what we do and in putting food on someone elseâs table.
Most importantly, they know they are part of something bigger than themselves - a family, a tradition, and a way of life that has been passed down for generations.
Summer may be over, and the beach days may be fewer for a while, but the lessons they learned out there will stay with them.
Seasons change. Kids grow. But once youâre a fisherman, itâs always a part of who you are.
