The Brown Eyed Susans (Rudbeckia triloba) are looking so good in my sunny bed right now! But what I love most about these is that they will continue to bloom and look great into mid-November, also providing crucial late season nectar for pollinators. The only thing to be cautious about this short-lived perennial is that they spread readily by seed so be sure to plant them where they can spread. Plant them in part-full sun in moist or dry soil and enjoy the blooms from July until fall frost. They can grow 2-4 feet tall and about 12-18" wide. I'll have these in plugs on Tuesday after noon.

Next week I'll have the popular spring bloomer Wild Columbine (Aquilegia canadensis) available in plugs! You can order these next Tuesday by 12 noon.

This beauty prefers part-full shade and average to moist soil. It can reach 1-3 feet tall by about 1 foot across. This is a relatively short lived perennial but it will naturalize (spread by seed) if it is happy.

Several insect larvae eat Aquilegia canadensis foliage and the flowers are pollinated by bumblebees and the Ruby-throated hummingbird.

Details:
-Common Pawpaw (Asimina triloba), 15-20 feet tall, part-full sun, average-wet soil, deer resistant, locally native.
The Pawpaw is the exclusive larval host plant for the zebra swallowtail butterfly.

-Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis), 5-12 feet (taller with wet soil), part-full sun moist-wet soil, deer resistant, locally native.
This shrub is highly attractive to bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and ducks and other water birds that consume the seeds.

Deschampsia cespitosa 'Goldtau' is a naturally occuring cultivar (also called a "selection") of Deschampsia cespitosa, commonly known as Tufted Hairgrass. What I love about this grass is that it stays in a clump and the foliage is evergreen! Technically it is listed as "semi-evergreen" so it may not be 100% evergreen for everyone; it depends on how cold our winters are and how protected your garden is.

This selection reaches about 12-24 inches in height with a 24-30" spread. It prefers part to full sun though I have been growing it successfully in full shade as well. The only thing this plant is picky about is that it does not want dry soil; it wants average to wet soil. I have these in plugs now for $3 each.

Tufted hairgrass is a larval food plant for several butterflies including umber skippers.

Does your Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa) have powdery mildew this time of year? Luckily there is a naturally occuring selection of this plant that is powdery mildew resistant! Monarda fistulosa 'Claire Grace' is not only mildew resistant, but it also scored #1 in the Mt. Cuba Center Monarda trial! This selection also has a sturdier habit, darker green glossy foliage and slightly darker flower color than the straight Monarda fistulosa. It is full of blooms for a full 3 weeks in June/July. All Monarda is deer and rabbit resistant due to its aromatic foliage. Monarda fistulosa provides habitat and forage to many pollinators including bees, butterflies, moths, and hummingbirds as well as some specialist insects. This plant spreads by creeping rhizomes.

Details: 3-4 feet tall, part-full sun, moist to average soil.
I have this selection now in 4" pots for $4 each.

If you have room for naturalizing (spreading) and want to add a keystone species to your garden, Smooth Oxeye, or Heliopsis helianthoides is a great choice! This plant grows 4-6 feet tall and has a long bloom of about 8 weeks! The pollinators love this flower in summer and songbirds enjoy the seeds in fall. It supports approximately 66 species of caterpillars and about 50 species of specialist bees. This plant is considered a short-lived perennial but self-sows readily and can stand up to other aggressive plants. It prefers moist, well-drained soil in full sun, but tolerates periods of drought and heavy clay soils. I have these now in plugs for $3 each and you can see these in a few different spots on my property now.

Add a little height to your garden with the Great Coneflower (Rudbeckia maxima). The powdery blue basal foliage is attractive all spring and summer before this perennial reaches 6-7 feet tall and blooms in June/July. This native prefers moist, fertile soils but will thrive in average garden conditions in full sun. While this plant likes wet feet, it is surprisingly drought resistant. This Rudbeckia is less aggressive than many others. I have these available now in plugs for $3 each.
