We have updated our quick reference sheets after customer feedback. You can come out and develop your own unique blend for that secret hunting spot where we sell our seed by the pound or use the attached reference sheets.

We added a River Bottoms sheet in addition to Clay and Sand. All three have the plot sizes broken down to 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, and full acre prices in case you want to develop a small kill plot.

As always, please share so we can get the work out.

Hey ya'll,

I know it doesn't feel like fall is here, but it's time to start planning to plant fall food plots. This will be Shelby's Garden Center's first time selling seed so please bear with us. The following information hopefully gives you some idea of what to look for.

For most of the Midwest (including Missouri), the following are among the best-performing and most commonly planted fall deer food plot seeds.

Seed Plant Time Deer Preference Winter Hardy
Winter Ryegrass, Aug.–Oct. ★★★★★ Excellent
Gulf Annual
Buck Forage Oats Aug.–Sept. ★★★★★ Good
Oats, Bob Aug.–Sept. ★★★★★ Good
Top Notch Forage, Aug.–Sept. ★★★★★ Good
Oats
Winter Wheat, Sept.–Oct. ★★★★☆ Excellent
Bearless
Purple Top Turnips July–Sept. ★★★★★ Excellent
(after frost)
Daikon/Tillage July–Sept. ★★★★★ Good
Radish
Turnips, July–Sept. ★★★★★ Good
Barkant Forage
Forage R**e July–Sept. ★★★★★ Excellent
Austrian Winter Aug.–Sept. ★★★★★ Fair-Good
Peas
Clover, Crimson, Aug.–Oct. ★★★★☆ Good
Coated
Ladino Clover, Aug.–Sept. ★★★★☆ Excellent
Coated - White

Top 10 individual fall food plot seeds by popularity
1. Winter Rye (Cereal Rye)
2. Purple Top Turnips
3. Daikon/Tillage Radish
4. Forage Oats
5. Winter Wheat
6. Austrian Winter Peas
7. Forage R**e
8. Crimson Clover
9. White Clover

Best seed mixtures
1. Attraction Mix (early bow season)
• 50% Forage Oats
• 25% Winter Rye
• 15% Austrian Winter Peas
• 10% Daikon Radish

2. Late Season Mix
• 50% Winter Rye
• 20% Winter Wheat
• 15% Purple Top Turnips
• 10% Forage R**e
• 5% Daikon Radish

3. Perennial Plot
• White Clover
• Red Clover
• Chicory

If your goal is maximum attraction from September through February

I would plant:
• Winter Rye
• Purple Top Turnips
• Daikon Radish
• Forage Oats
• Austrian Winter Peas
• Crimson Clover

For deer food plots in Missouri, these are the recommended broadcast seeding rates per acre when each species is planted alone and the recommended rates when included in a mixture.

Variety Pure Stand (lb/ac) In Mix (lb/ac)
Winter Rye 100–150 50–75
Winter Wheat 90–120 40–60
Forage Oats 80–100 30–50
Austrian Winter Peas 40–80 20–40
Purple Top Turnips 2–5 1–2
Daikon/Tillage Radish 5–10 2–4
Forage R**e 3–5 1–2
Crimson Clover 15–20 5–8
White Clover 3–5 1–2
Red Clover 8–12 3–5

This combination provides:
• September–October: Oats, peas, and rye.
• November–December: Rye, brassicas, and clover.
• January–March: Rye remains one of the best green food sources while turnip bulbs become highly attractive after repeated frosts.

For deer food plots in Missouri, these are the recommended broadcast seeding rates per acre when each species is planted alone and the recommended rates when included in a mixture.

Recommended planting calendar:

Crop Ideal Dates Acceptable Dates
Brassicas Jul 25 – Aug 20 Jul 20 – Aug 31
(Turnips, Radish, R**e)
