OK Guitars

OK Guitars I will be posting all the guitars I acquire. I scour the internet and the world for the best Gibson ES 335's. 345's and 355's.

My brick and mortar shop is now closed. Online sales only until further notice.

The term "burst killer" gets tossed around a lot and that assumes that a burst is an unusually good sounding guitar and, in general, that is true. But if there is one guitar that can claim that moniker, it's a first rack ES-345. Huge neck, thin top and, of course, PAFs. With the Varitone in or out, it is perhaps the best guitar Gibson ever made. There are around 100 of them (three racks, actually so 105). I've owned perhaps 25 of them over the years and every one of them has been great. Look for factory order numbers S8537, S8538 and S8539. This one just arrived at OK Guitars and is from the S8538 rack. This one has been converted to ES-335 electronics.

When I was 13 years old (1964) I went with my Dad to Manny's in NYC to buy a Stratocaster. I wanted a sunburst and, oddly, there were none hanging on the wall. I asked the sales person to show me a Stratocaster (I also asked to see an Epiphone Crestwood) and he brought down two guitars from "upstairs". First, I tried the Epiphone but they had changed the body style and neck profile that year and I couldn't play on a narrow fingerboard (I still can't) and it was Inverness Green which wasn't even an Epi color. It was ugly. Then I opened the Strat case. You know it's odd that they brought it to me in a case. They didn't usually do that. Staring me in the face was a Sonic Blue Stratocaster. To quote the 13 year old Charlie Gelber..."I'm not playing a baby blue guitar." I ended up buying a sunburst Jaguar (see my FB photo). Fast forward 61 years. Now I'm playing a gorgeous baby blue 64 Strat (until somebody buys it). BTW, the Jaguar cost $235. The Sonic Blue Strat was $220. Worth a little more now.

This very attractive 1959 ES-335 isn't just another pretty face, it's a monster player. Big fat neck, original PAFs, factory stop tail, long guard, etc, etc. I should have it in a week or so. 59 is THE year at Gibson for most models. I have never owned a bad 59 335, 345 or 355. 59's also tend to appreciate faster than any other year.

Every now and then, I have an unusual variety of ES guitars and I always take a group photo. This photo shows nearly every semi hollow blonde type made from 58-65 (and one that is full hollow). They are left to right from rear: Unbound 335 dot (58), Bound 335 Bigsby dot (59), 335 stop tail dot (60), 335 block (63-one of only two known), 345 stop tail (59), 355 (63-one of five known blonde 355's from the era). Foreground: ES-330TDN (60), Epiphone Sheraton (made at Gibson Kalamazoo). And, yes, they are all for sale except for the 345 (my personal player). The 355 is sold.

Only the eighth known red 59 ES-335. This came out of Germany. Watermelon red finish, thin top, double white PAFs, flames and big fat neck. What more could you ask for? This is the 7th one I’ve had.

Thanks to Chris at Little Tokyo Guitars in LA for this near mint 55 Twin. It has a good home next to its brother, a near mint 59 Bandmaster. Big tweeds are wonderful amps and it's nearly impossible to find them in this condition (because they didn't stay at home-they gigged). You could eat off the control panel it's so clean. No re-tweeds here.

Betcha don't have one of these in your collection of cool 335's. Block neck blondes had to be special ordered and very few have surfaced. There's a lefty 64 and a Bigsby 65. I think I had a 68 a few years back as well. But a Golden Era (58-64) blonde block neck? Just the two that I know of and, unless you are a lefty, this is the only game in town until another one surfaces.

In case you missed it over on the Vintage Gibson Group page, here's a rare, rare 1959 ES-355. What's the big deal? Mono 59's are rare-177 made. Stop tail 355's are crazy rare-4 or 5 made in 59, sunburst 355's are impossible -1 known 59. That makes this unique. One of a kind. Yes, it's for sale. Email or call.
