🌳 TREE & SHRUB PLANTING GUIDE
🍂 FALL IS THE PERFECT TIME TO PLANT!
Fall is an excellent time to plant trees and shrubs! Cooler temperatures and naturally moist soil give plants time to establish their roots before next spring and summer.
Give your new trees and shrubs the best possible start with these simple planting tips:
1. Choose the Right Location
• Check how much sunlight your plant needs.
• Consider its mature height and width.
• Keep plants away from buildings, power lines, driveways, and underground utilities.
• Choose an area with good drainage.
2. Dig the Hole
• Dig the hole 2–3 times wider than the root ball.
• The root flare should sit at or slightly above ground level.
3. Place Your Plant
• Carefully remove the tree or shrub from its container or burlap.
• Gently loosen circling roots.
• Set the plant straight and make sure it is at the proper depth.
4. Backfill
• Use the soil you removed from the hole mixed with nutrient rich soil.
• Break up large clumps and gently fill around the roots.
• Never bury the trunk or root flare.
5. WATER, WATER, WATER! 💧
Give your newly planted tree or shrub a deep, slow watering immediately after planting.
Continue checking the soil regularly throughout fall. Even though temperatures are cooler, newly planted plants still need consistent moisture while their roots establish.
6. Add Mulch
• Apply 2–4 inches of mulch around the plant.
• Keep mulch a few inches away from the trunk or stems.
• Do not pile mulch against the plant.
7. Give It Time 🌱
Fall-planted trees and shrubs have the opportunity to focus energy on root development before the growing season begins.
