Fireworks Safety Tips: Safe Distances & Proper Disposal

1. Maintain A Safe Distance
- Keep spectators at least 35 feet away from consumer fireworks and follow all manufacturer recommendations.
- Safe distances help protect people from burns, sparks, and unexpected explosions.

2. Use Fireworks in Open Areas
- Light fireworks only in clear, outdoor spaces away from homes, vehicles, dry grass, and trees.
- Sparks can travel farther than expected and quickly ignite nearby materials.

3. Keep Water Nearby
- Have a bucket of water, garden hose, or fire extinguisher readily available.
- Quick access to water can help extinguish small fires before they spread.

4. Never Relight a “Dud” Firework
- If a firework does not ignite, wait at least 20 minutes before approaching it.
- A delayed ignition could occur unexpectedly and cause serious injury.

5. Light One Firework at a Time
- Move away immediately after lighting and never lean over fireworks.
- This reduces the risk of burns and injuries from sudden ignition or malfunction.

6. Properly Dispose of Used Fireworks
- Soak spent fireworks in water overnight before placing them in a trash container.
- Fireworks can remain hot, long after use and may reignite if discarded too soon.

7. Keep Children and Pets at a Safe Distance
- Closely supervise children and keep pets indoors during firework displays.
- Loud noises, sparks, and unexpected explosions can cause injuries and stress.
