It's been a busy week in the Yankee's wood shop. 10 new pieces will be up for sale tomorrow at the Rice Village Artisan Market, 2502 Times Blvd., Houston, from 9am-1pm. Two large salad/fruit bowls, three live edge "banana" bowls, a matching set of four salad/cereal bowls, and a "thing" that I can't describe, other than to say it came from a Myrtlewood burl, and the grain and color are spectacular. Come on out! There's a farmer's market right across the street so you can fill up your new bowls with fresh fruits and veggies.

This is the craziest and most beautiful wood I've ever seen. My neighbors across the street were having a tree cut down in their front yard. As the tree guys were about to throw it into the wood chipper I asked if I could have a couple of small logs. It just looked like run-of-the-mill wood. I was amazed when I got it on the lathe and found this. This piece will go to my neighbors as a "thank you", and I have seven more pieces. I can't wait to see what's inside.

I'm looking forward to The Market At Sawyer Yards on Saturday, Sept. 10, and I have some new things for sale. First is a large cedar vase made from the trunk of a tree that fell in my yard last year. From the same tree, a small(er) vase. And a river-themed cookie jar.

Mesquite - my new favorite wood to turn - not too hard, not too soft, easy to turn, easy to sand easy to finish. And the grain is beautiful. Maybe that's why it's so expensive.
