Did you know that Delaware Bay is part of the Delaware River Watershed? Tidal effects can carry environmental contaminants from the ocean as far inland as Trenton NJ, only 28 miles downstream of the Shoal. Check the link below to learn more about the latest threat to our riparian ecosystem.

More than 100 people have been working to clean up an 11-mile stretch of beach in Delaware fouled by an oil spill of unknown origin last week.

Channel between Marshall Island and an unnamed islet to the west, approximately 1.5 miles upstream of the Shoal. Dry for half the year, it collects large amounts of salvageable material including wrecked boats and other flood debris at times of high water.

Did you know that the Christina River is a tributary of the Delaware River? They meet at Wilmington DE approximately 88 miles downstream of the Shoal. Because it flows into the Delaware, its health affects the health of the entire watershed. Check the link below to learn more.

Cormorant taking flight at Hendrick Island, approximately 7 miles downstream of the Shoal. While the maximum depth of the Delaware is 113 feet, cormorants can dive up to 145 feet, so there is no spot in the river too deep for them to reach.

We talk a lot about Treasure Island, our closest neighbor (300 feet from the Shoal). The BSA camp was abandoned in 2008 due to repeated floods but Scouts returned in 2018 and have been hard at work ever since refurbishing the site for future generations. Anything you could possibly want to know about it, including how to visit, is on their FB page Treasure Island Archive.

Message in a bottle found on Marshall Island approximately 1.5 miles upstream of the Shoal. These are more common than you think; we come across several each year. It contained information of a very personal nature so we sent it on its way in a fresh bottle. Still waiting for one with a treasure map...

Looking upriver at Stuhls Falls, a class 1 rapid approximately 4.5 miles upstream of the Shoal. Wrecked boats that did not pass through safely are scattered across the riverbed immediately downstream. When conditions are right, we raise and scrap them.
