Palms In The News

Sometimes palms outgrow even the spaces designed for them. The Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden made the difficult decision to remove two towering palms that had grown too close to the conservatory's iconic 80-foot dome—but seven new palm species are already planned as replacements.

Read the story and explore more palm-related headlines in our Palms In The News section on Project Palm! 🌴

Also visit our Where the Palms Are section on our website to learn more about the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden.

They are about to outgrow the iconic botanical garden dome.

Licuala sallehana var. sallehana

The genus Licuala has incredible variety found within it. Some species have nearly circular leaves, others are deeply divided. This species has unique paddle shaped leaves.

This species showcases the elegance that has made Licuala one of the most beloved genera among palm enthusiasts.

Areca catechu
Betel Nut Palm

This may be one of the most culturally significant palms on Earth.

Across much of Asia and the Pacific, the palm's fruit—commonly known as betel nut or areca nut—has been used for centuries and remains popular in many regions today. Often chewed as part of a traditional preparation, it plays an important role in local customs, social gatherings, and cultural traditions that span countless communities and generations.

Palm species identification assistance.

A colleague shared these photos of an unknown Corypha species he is growing in his garden. Amongst other known Coryphas (utan, umbraculifera and lecomtei), this juvenile palm is recovering from some of the cold damage from this past winter's low temperatures. Can you help identify this species?

Of note, was the comment about the "very distinctive teeth on the palm leaf itself, it’s the only one with these features."

Any and all suggestions are appreciated! Please help us solve this mystery!
