‼️ Our Stance as an Organization on Declawing: ‼️
(Buckle up! This is a "sorry, not sorry" post!) 😉
🚫 We DO NOT adopt out cats to people who declaw their cats! 🚫
We never have and we never will! If you have declawed a cat in the recent past, currently own cats that you had declawed, or think declawing is ok to do to a cat, we will not adopt out a cat to you. This is for the health and safety of our cats that we love, which is paramount to everything else!
🚫 This is NOT an issue that is up for debate when it comes to adopting from us!
🚫 This is not an issue that we will be bought and sold on! 😱
📢 This is an EXTREMELY IMPORTANT topic that NEEDS to be talked about! ‼️ TALK ABOUT IT! SHARE IT! ‼️ If you were NOT aware that declawing is inhumane and have never discussed this issue with an honest vet who educated you, PLEASE READ!!!!
❓ Why don't we adopt out to people who declaw? ❓
Because declawing is abuse, plain and simple! Yes, this sadly used to be a common practice in past decades but we are not in the 80s anymore!!!! It's time to get EDUCATED about what is actually best for CATS! It's TIME TO CARE!!!!! 🐾🐾 While laws do matter, personal choice can be even more significant at times! For example, YOU can make a difference NOW by choosing NOT to declaw your cats even if it is still legal in your state! 💪
⚠️ FACTS about declawing: ⚠️
⚠️ Declawing is currently illegal in 6 states and in over 40 countries!!!
⚠️ Declawing isn't just removing a cat's claws, it is an amputation. On a human, this is the equivalent of cutting off the end of each of your fingers at the first knuckle! 😭
⚠️ Many vets choose not to declaw even if it is still legal in their state!
⚠️ In addition to the obvious immediate pain that this causes a cat when it is performed, it can lead to future physical and behavioral issues in the cat's health! We have seen plenty of declawed cats dumped outside, abandoned, or surrendered to shelters so it DOES NOT PREVENT cats from being surrendered or gotten rid of!
⚠️ According to Humane World for Animals, declawing can cause paw pain, back pain, infection, tissue necrosis (tissue death) and lameness. Removing claws changes the way a cat's feet meet the ground and can cause pain like wearing an uncomfortable pair of shoes. Improperly removed claws can regrow, causing nerve damage and bone spurs. For several days after surgery, shredded newspaper is typically used in the litter box to prevent litter from irritating declawed feet. This unfamiliar litter substitute, accompanied by pain when scratching in the box, may lead cats to permanently avoid using the litter box. Some cats may become biters because they are in pain and no longer have their claws for defense.
❓ Did you know??? ❓
⚠️ Scratching is NORMAL cat behavior; it helps your cat stretch their muscles, shed the outer nail sheath from their claws and mark territory. Because they have scent glands on their paws, scratching is also a way of putting their scent in their territory, which helps them feel at home and secure. (Humane World for Animals.)
⚠️ There are HUMANE ALTERNATIVES such as scratching posts, reinforcement of "good" behaviors, covering items you don't want scratched with sheets, tape, or blankets, TRIMMING nails, or using nail caps!
⚠️ Cats have claws!!! Don't like it??? Then don't get a cat!!!
‼️ Now you know! ‼️ (New Yorkers, thank you for bearing with us on this one!!!)
👉 If this information offends you, feel free to unlike or unfollow! We will not waver on this stance when it comes to adopting out our cats!
📢 Talk to your vet office about declawing! Do they currently declaw cats??? ❓ If so, speak up and let them know how you feel about that! AND! If you are looking for a vet office in Tioga County that shares your values and concerns regarding declawing, Grand Canyon Vet Hospital in Wellsboro, PA does NOT declaw cats even though it is still legal in PA so this could be a good option for you! ❤️🩹
Thank you for your attention to this matter!
