Introducing our mini moss ball aquariums, available in-store 🦠

Moss balls are honestly one of the most underrated little desk companions out there! No feedings, minimal water changes, just a tiny aquarium that kind of takes care of itself! And here’s the part that always gets people: a half inch moss ball is already about a year old, and they can have indefinite lifetime (as long as their cared for correctly 🫶🏾)

Perfect for anyone who loves the idea of a little aquarium but just doesn’t have the time for the upkeep. Come by the shop and find yours 🦠

It’s been a while since I’ve taken y’all on a little tour of our Knoxville storefront 🌿

And there is honestly SO much going on in here and I feel like a lot of people don’t realize everything you can do when you come in!

You can sit down at our building bar and build your own terrarium or ʻŌpae ʻUla shrimp ecosystem from scratch (we recommend booking your spot in advance at the link in bio! We can’t always guarantee a full session for walk-ins), take home an ecosystem that’s already built and thriving, or stock up on everything you’d need to build at home… plants, moss balls, glass, figurines, sand, gravel, you name it, we probably have it! We also have DIY kits if you’d rather take the whole experience home with you 😌

And honestly even if you’re just curious and want to look around, that’s more than enough of a reason to come in. There’s always something new to see, and our little resident crew, Ms. Grits, Mr. Dumpling, and all the other friends we have living here, are always happy to have visitors 😂

Ms. Grits has been with us since before Plush Moon Terrarium Co was even an idea! But I recently just learned something new about her (which was low-key shocking because usually I’m the one telling people fun facts about their pets, not the other way around 😂)

Ms. Grits isn’t just a rotund oddball of an axolotl, she’s actually a Tiger Salamander Axolotl! Which means she’s larger than typical axolotls and she has some unique habits like wanting to hunt her own food (even is she’s not very good at it 😂)

Come by the shop and introduce yourself! Just don’t get too close during feeding time 🫶🏾

If you’ve ever loved the idea of having plants but just can’t seem to keep them going… hi, we made something for you 🌿

Our DIY Terrarium Kits were literally made for you... the ones who love plants but can’t seem to keep them alive, the ones who just don’t have the time, or the ones who have accepted that cacti are simply not for them 😌 Everything you need to build your own unique little world is already in the box! Drainage rocks, sphagnum moss, charcoal, soil, moss, a watering bottle, and a care guide to walk you through the whole thing. You just bring the glass (thrifting your container is honestly half the fun)!

Terrariums are way more forgiving than whatever’s been struggling on your windowsill, and once you build it and get it going, it kind of just does its thing!

At 29 years old, I can happily say that I am a proud mother who won’t have to pay college tuition 💅🏾

ʻŌpae ʻUla shrimp (also known as Hawaiian Lava Shrimp) are SO special because they’re one of the longest living shrimp in the world, capable of living up to 20 years under the right conditions. No water changes, minimal feeding, and a closed ecosystem that basically runs itself. Lowest maintenance children I’ll ever have 😌

Our team is shipping out the first round of DIY shrimp ecosystem kits and we want to make sure your shrimp are set up for success from day one 🦐🌿

Water is the most important part of this whole setup, so let’s talk about it first. I beg. BEG. Do not go to the ocean or to your sink to fill up your tank 😅 No ocean water, no tap water, not even treated or dechlorinated water. Distilled or reverse osmosis water only!

Now here’s the thing! ʻŌpae ʻUla shrimp live in brackish water, which means we’re mixing fresh and salt water. You’ll use a gallon of distilled or reverse osmosis water and mix in the entire packet of salt included in your kit. Shake it up and let it sit for 24 hours!

After 24 hours, don’t add the water just yet! First you’ll need to check the temperature! You’re aiming for 65–80°F (we keep ours at 68–70° here at the shop). Temperature shocking your shrimp is a very real thing, so don’t skip this step 🙏🏾

Once the temp is in range, you can start filling your tank, but don’t fill it all the way! Leave about an inch of air gap at the top. Pro tip: lay a piece of plastic wrap over your figurines while you fill so they stay in place 😌

Then add your chaeto (macro algae) and finally the stars of the show 🦐🫶🏾
