“Hamingja is earned…”. Thursday wisdom
What If Luck Isn’t Random?
The Norse had a word for something deeper than luck:
Hamingja.
It was believed to be a force that followed a person throughout life a blend of fortune, reputation, strength, and destiny.
A person with strong hamingja seemed to attract opportunities. Their ventures prospered. Their words carried weight. Others wanted to follow them. Success appeared to find them wherever they went.
But the old Norse did not believe this was mere chance.
Hamingja was earned.
It grew through courage when fear would have been easier.
Through keeping your word when breaking it would have been convenient.
Through facing hardship without surrendering who you are.
Some stories even suggest that hamingja could outlive a person, passing to their descendants and shaping generations yet to come.
Perhaps that is why the old tales place such importance on honor and character.
Because the greatest inheritance may not be gold, land, or possessions.
It may be the fortune you create through the life you choose to live.
