I'm loving DC and Image this week!
Two new number 1s, and we check in on the latest chapters of a couple of other titles!

From Image Comics
Prolific indie writer Patrick Kindlon teams with French artist Ludovic Lalliat for the new ongoing series, REGICIDE! From the very first page, the art style, the pacing of the writing, and even the rectangular word balloons and the lettering, all combine to give this comic a European vibe. I immediately felt like I was reading a classic issue of Heavy Metal Magazine. A mysterious masked man rides into a very small farming village and requests the biggest, strongest farmer accompany him on a journey to the heart of the kingdom. Sent against his will by the village elders, the farmer immediately begins to question the stranger's motives. A medieval type tale, full of magic, danger, and inhuman creatures unfolds. This one could get interesting!

The superstar team of Mark Waid and Chris Samnee return for BATMAN & ROBIN: YEAR ONE - DYNAMIC DUOS 1! This first issue features what may be the coolest, most intense opening four pages I've read in a very long time! Dark, suspenseful and action packed, and there are 16 more pages after that! After thwarting a twisted murder attempt, Batman and Robin return home early so Bruce Wayne can…go on a date?! Chaos ensues, as only it can in comics, and a very special guest crashes the party. If you loved the first series, this promises to be just as great, if not better.

Robert Kirkman's Energon Universe continues to fire on all cylinders! It's all just nostalgia gold for this 80s kid, with an awesome modern update. In M.A.S.K. 3, writer Dan Watters had me instantly holding my breath as Gloria Baker attempts to save herself from the aftermath of Mayhem's attack at the end of last issue. Does she escape? Did Sato even survive? What are those weird tattoos? And DO NOT miss the last page reveal of HUGE insight into Mayhem's motivations, and the further expansion of the EU! Pye Parr, once again, lays out some gorgeous vehicles, and intense action!

CHACHU 1 is the debut comic written by actress Iman Vellani (MCU’s Ms. Marvel)! Set in 1979 LA, we see 19-year-old Leila, a Pakastani/Canadian college student, in search of her estranged uncle, who is married to a film starlet. When said starlet goes on the run, Leila insists on inserting herself into the drama. The writing here is refreshingly superb! Vellani is verbose, with lots of narration, and fun dialogue, but it all works, and never feels extraneous. Artist Marianna Ignazzi nails the period and the awkwardness, and colorist Jordie Bellaire’s palette is perfection!

WHAT IF…? CAPTAIN AMERICA wasn't revived until 2099? Frequent Marvel contributor Marc Guggenheim (Bring On the Bad Guys) thaws Steve Rogers out in the far flung future of Miguel O’Hara and Paul-Phillip Ravage! This means Cap missed everything from the Kree/Skrull War to Civil War, and beyond. When he discovers oppressive corporations have taken over the country, can the heroes of 2099 convince Cap to lead their revolution? Legendary artist Ron Lim returns to characters he helped create, and they look better than ever! This is an excellent addition to the What If lineup!

The MOTU roll out continues with MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE: GENESIS 1! This is a cool story by Rich Douek, highlighting Skeletor’s origin in The Horde, and how Beast Man and Mer-Man came to serve him. More importantly, this book features the art of Gavin Smith a Kokomo area native! Gavin is a good friend of Comics Cubed and KokomoCon! He's constantly making the rounds on the big con circuit. I believe he just tabled at SDCC! In recent years, he's worked on major franchises like Star Trek and TMNT, and is now adding MOTU to his resume. Gavin is continuously improving upon his detailed and expressive style, and his skills certainly shine on this project! Pick up a copy to support local talent!
