It’s pretty common for me to hear customers say their parents used to bring them into the store when they were little.

And now, every time they come back, it feels like reliving a positive memory of their mom.

It’s comforting.

And that’s the thing…

small businesses become more than just places people shop at.

Over time, they become woven into people’s routines, memories, traditions, and lives.

Years pass.
People grow up.
Life changes.

But somehow those familiar places are still there alongside it all.

I think that’s part of what makes long-standing family businesses feel so emotional and human.

Not because nothing changed…
but because life did.

As a clinical psychology student, I’ve been thinking a lot about how our choices reflect our deeper values… even our shopping habits.

This is no judgment between shopping at big corporations or small businesses… it’s just interesting to notice the different choices we make that reflect our personal values. Some people value convenience, accessibility, speed, and efficiency — and that makes complete sense. But values also change over time. Maybe you value convenience one day but then value community the next.

However, I do think many people are subconsciously drawn toward small businesses because they reflect a lot of values we want more of in our lives:
community, creativity, connection, authenticity, belonging, kindness, and human interaction.

There’s something deeply personal about walking into a space where you can feel the care behind the products, the creativity behind the environment, and the people behind the business.

As someone studying ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), this made me think about values in a different way. Values aren’t goals you “complete.” They’re directions you continue moving toward throughout your life.

So maybe the places we spend our money, time, and attention can sometimes reveal the kind of life we’re trying to build.

Not saying one choice is “better” than another… just inviting reflection. 🤍
