Unpopular opinion: the concept of "w**ds" and the ire they incur from society is a 3-pronged attack by big business. Let me explain...
First, it's a construct of "big lawn" propaganda. Folks who want to sell you their lawn care fixing services, hardware stores that want to sell you grass seed and herbicides.
The faux-american-dream-idealism of perfect uniform yards and white picket fences. Where everyone's yard is perfectly landscaped and indistinguishable from one another. Sameness.
And not only to the detriment of so-called 'w**ds' but also to biodiversity, native plant preservation, and the creatures that rely on these plants for food & shelter.
Additionally, many plants we consider 'w**ds' were important sources of food and medicine to indigenous folks, and early settlers. Many naturalized plants are from Europe, China, etc.
Secondly, this lawn care nonsense comes from grocery stores. Think about it: if we all foraged our food, gardened, or bought from farmers directly we wouldn't NEED grocery stores. So killing off these ancient food sources keeps the big business of human consumption going.
The THIRD factor of w**d perception & control: big pharma. If we relied on the healing abilities of plants, we wouldn't NEED big pharma (as much, anyways).
It all comes down to profiteering, controlling the narrative, and disenfranchisement of society. If we're sold the idea that we cannot care for ourselves, and need 'big business' to save us, then we become complacent, traditions are forgotten or discounted as hooey or superstition, and we kill off the very things that could save us.
Don't punch a hole in your own boat, and expect someone else to save you.
