1933 Chicago World's Fair, Entrance to the Illinois Host House
Fair visitors saw the latest wonders in rail travel, automobiles, architecture and cigarette-smoking robots. The exposition "emphasized technology and progress, a utopia, or perfect world, founded on democracy and manufacturing."
The postcard, addressed to someone in Wisconsin is dated 1933 and reads:
"Dear Aunt, Uncle & Cousins,
Just a line to let you know we are having a good time and plenty to see. It rained all afternoon yesterday & looks like it might today again. It's terribly cold.

Switching things up this time with a vintage black and white photo I picked up at a local antique store. Who is this woman and what event had her all dressed up and carrying flowers on a presumably chilly day in Chicago? Could she be a bride, a bridesmaid? There's no definitive date on the photo though there is a series of numbers stamped on the back (0354) that might suggest March of '54.

Chateau de Chillon et Dents du Midi, Switzerland
Chillon Castle, situated on an island on Lake Geneva, is one of the most visited medieval castles in Europe. It was originally a Roman outpost, guarding the strategic road through the Alpine passes. In the background sit the Dents du Midi (French for "teeth of noon").
The postcard, addressed to someone in New York, was never sent – no stamp or postmark. Only parts of the handwritten message (which has been crossed out) are decipherable: "this old castle is of the 14th century – perhaps older... is very wonderful and in a good state of preservation. We are enjoying the ... and perhaps it is our indulgence that has given me a ... twinge occasionally. But I must enjoy it while the opportunity offers.”

What colors come to mind when you think of Lake Geneva, Switzerland and Mountains? For me it's blues and greens ...

Fishing anyone?!?I love reading the messages on the backs of these old postcards, thinking about the people sending them and hearing about their travels. This one reads:
Hi,
Kenny picked this one for Fred. Says that is his fishing pole. We finally made it here. Jim probably told you about the car trouble. Having a big family reunion Sunday. Lots of food and people!

A vintage postcard picturing a replica of Chicago’s Fort Dearborn from the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair (Century of Progress Exposition) embellished with the city’s flag. The fourth star was added to the flag to symbolize the Century of Progress Exposition.

Couldn't resist grabbing this postcard from a local vintage shop and adding some embellishment. I've got one of these beasts under my own roof and I know he'd like nothing more than spending his days outdoors lounging in the Pyrenees mountains … although the shores of Lake Michigan aren’t bad.

Apparently there were fireworks when All Souls Church in London was built in 1823 – and not the good kind. Designed by architect John Nash, it was not well received when first constructed. He was criticized for the design, especially the slender conical spire which was lampooned in political cartoons at the time under the caption "Nashional Taste!!!!" Today it's considered one of London's most remarkable churches.

Found this old Cape Breton postcard at a vintage store in Burlington Vt. (Hand embroidery added by me!) Looking at this idyllic summer scene makes me want to visit. It’s been added it to my bucket list!

DETOUR … I’m officially obsessed with embroidery on vintage ephemera. I’ll definitely get back to my other work but I’ve been dabbling at this for a couple weeks and I’m really loving it. Half the fun is sourcing the materials to stitch on and finding the notes on the back of postcards and photos.

In early September I was super excited to learn my submission to Uppercase Magazine had been accepted and I’d be included in issue #51. It’s finally arrived in the mail and there’s my work! This issue focuses on all forms of art that involve quilting - textiles, paper, wood and more. As you can see my paper quilt block collages get a nice little shout out.

A little bit about the process behind my quilt block collages:
1. Select and cut paper pieces chosen from hand painted and embellished papers.
2. Compose pieces into quilt block pattern.
3. Overstitch the assembled piece.
4. Optional finishing - mounting on wood block.
