I will never stop stressing the importance of quality childbirth education.
And no, this isn't just for first-time moms.
First baby? Take a class.
First home birth? Take a class.
Planning your first unmedicated birth? Take a class.
Planning a VBAC? Take a class.
Been several years since your last baby? Take a refresher.
Because even if you've given birth before, you are preparing for an experience you've never actually had before.
Things change. Your body changes. Your circumstances change. Your preferences may change. Your last birth may have looked completely different from the birth you're hoping for this time.
Childbirth education can prepare you for the physical, mental, and emotional experience of labor. It can teach you comfort measures, positions, coping techniques, what to expect, what your options are, how to communicate with your care team, and how to make informed decisions when you're in the middle of something intense.
And there is evidence behind the value of taking a real course.
A 2021 study of 2,853 women found that those who attended childbirth education had lower odds of using pain medication during labor, lower odds of planned cesarean birth, and greater shared decision-making. The benefits were stronger in several areas for women who attended courses with three or more sessions compared with shorter courses.
And please don't replace childbirth education with watching a couple of 2-minute Instagram videos between appointments. ๐
Those can be helpful, sure, but they're not the same thing.
Take the class. Ask the questions. Practice the tools. Prepare for the birth you want.
