Danish mathematician Piet Hein created the first Soma Cube Puzzle in the 1930’s. It’s hard to pinpoint the exact year because of the historical record. Hein simply called his puzzle Soma. The name Soma comes from Aldous Huxley’s novel, a Brave New World, published in 1932. The Soma in the novel was a fictional addictive drug meant to relax citizens in a utopian society.
Hein may have named it Soma because during psychological testing with the puzzle all of the subjects asked to continue to play with it even when the tests were over. In this respect Soma is addicting.
This Soma Cube isn't quite the same as Hein's but it's still very addicting.
