J.R. Jones: A Warrior Beneath the Waves

J.R. Jones served in the elite U.S. Navy’s Underwater Demolition Team 9 (UDT-9) during World War II, one of the courageous units that would later become the foundation of the Navy SEALs. His service placed him at the forefront of history’s most dangerous operations.

Throughout the war, he endured two major amphibious invasions, survived multiple Kamikaze attacks, and weathered two devastating Pacific typhoons. During the invasion of Luzon in the Philippines, his battle gear was severely damaged during a Kamikaze strike, a stark reminder of the constant danger faced by those serving on the front lines.

When the war drew to a close, J.R. and the men of UDT-9 were stationed in Korea, preparing for the planned invasion of Japan—an operation rendered unnecessary by Japan’s surrender.

For his extraordinary courage under enemy fire, J.R. Jones was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V”, recognizing acts of valor in direct combat. His story is one of resilience, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication to his country during one of the most pivotal moments in world history.
