❤️❤️ “Grandma Chic.” Has a nice ring to it - at least for us old grandmas - doesn’t it?? It’s a 2026 decorating trend that I first learned about from my granddaughter a year ago when she was rummaging through my closets and cupboards for antique floral paintings and mismatched china to decorate her college dorm room with. Honestly, I thought it was sweet… but surprising! She’s thoughtful, sentimental… deeply concerned about the environment and passionate about thrifting, just like her mom and her grandma 🥰🌎. Even still, I was surprised but touched that she would want my old things - things that I had tucked away, thinking they’d probably never see the light of day again until they were dragged out to the driveway for a yard sale after I’m gone. Honestly, some of it belonged to MY grandmother, and I just didn’t have the interest in using it or the heart to part with it. I mean, I can appreciate the time and patience it took to crochet those doilies… but who really needs them? Besides, I’m trying to keep up with the decorating trends!! 😅
Shabby Chic had its moment in the ‘90s. Then we tossed out the faded floral slipcovers and ushered in Old World elegance for what seemed like a nanosecond. But we soon groaned under the weight of those Greek columns and urns and traded that heaviness in for the lighter, easier Farmhouse decor, and embraced the rustic comfort and thriftiness of country living… salvaging old fences and doors and filling old mason jars with fresh wild flowers. We all wanted to move to Waco, Texas to be near Magnolia Farms… or at least to the country and raise chickens and goats. Then there was the slightly more Industrial twist… just to keep HL (a popular retail store) sales moving… followed by the sleek simplicity of a Mid-Century Modern revival, as well as the more hippy-inspired Boho decor, with wicker and bamboo and lots of plants… 😅🪴💕
Who can keep up? Who decides these trends anyway?? And who has the money to replace their furniture and decor every 5 years??? Not me!!! I’ve ended up with a few cherished pieces from each decorating era. My style is a bit of a mish-mash…. or to phrase it a bit more elegantly, “eclectic.” 😂❤️
I love this new Grandma Chic decorating trend. It’s really not that surprising at all. I think, as a society, we’re looking for nostalgia… for comfort… for stability… for anything that feels like a loving embrace… 🤗❤️
The term is validating. I’m a grandma… not a mimi or a nana… just a silly old grandma with a big heart, an eclectic sense of style and too many cats. If I’m “chic” too, well that just makes my day. 🥰🐾❤️❤️
