Necessarily Nerdy's mission is to inspire joy, spark creativity, and build a supportive community through the art of playful making.

My foray into creating nerdy plushies started when I could not keep my young son away from our game controllers. I took a close look at our Xbox controller and decided…I think I can make that! Maybe that will be a distraction from the actual controllers….Did it work? Absolutely not 😛

But what I did discover was, I could make that! And since I don’t do anything half way I began to experiment with add-ons, fabric and stuffing types, sewing techniques ect. Yes I managed to nerd out about sewing while sewing nerdy things 🙂

My crafts have grown from fleece to minky, from a basic machine to an embroidery, Cricut, & serger, and from basic designs to complex patterns of my own and others. However, my favorite part of sewing remains, creating cute items for other’s enjoyment. I still sew for myself, for my family, and now for people all over the world! I keep learning, growing, and finding new outlets to explore and expand. Thank you for your support!

A Kitten Nugget can never have too many nugget sized costume options!

Today in the craft room, I turned some fluffy black minky, and thread into a new Butterfly Kitten Nugget costume!

I saw Butterfly is a word that varies widely in different languages so I looked it up and in Dutch a butterfly is a vlinder!

Now I think every kitten nugget needs a chance to fly with these lovely vlinder wings!

I started with a gradient green thread to match the body but what color butterfly should I make next?

Welcome to my new creative headquarters!

After moving across an ocean, I’m VERY excited to finally show you where the magic is happening! The embroidery machines, fabric, and all the storage we could imagine finally are ready!
Keep an eye out for several sneaky Dittos hiding throughout. How many can you spot?

And yes, this room is still a work in progress but it’s usable and has already been very productive!

A special guest has entered Nico’s travel diary…

Meet Winry, one of the three official inspectors of the new Necessarily Nerdy headquarters.
Her favorite features of the accommodations are this fabric pile, this fabric pile, and this fabric pile.
Although she does dismay that recently the fabric piles have disappeared.

As you can see the unpacking continues- even with the most helpful supervisors.
It’s been a challenge learning how to get so much into such small spaces but just like the move itself- we are figuring it out one pile/box at a time!

The best part is we’re getting closer to the part that is most exciting, creating, making, and bringing adorable things to life.
The fabric piles might be disappearing but the creativity is just getting started!

Strap in because Nico has landed at the Amsterdam IKEA!

IKEA may not be everyone’s idea of adventure but they sure had a lot of fun exploring and comparing it to the those in the states.

There are little differences but best news of all is there are still delicious meatballs (and so many more bread options!). Nico found lots of adorable places to rest.

Nico’s trip also comes with some very important news- the embroidery machines (and all of our other items) have finally arrived!

There is still a LOT of unpacking but seeing all of the Necessarily Nerdy essentials again is so amazing.
We’re a lot closer to creating again and Nico, of course, will be supervising the set up.

Nico has entered the game!

Our tiny traveler took a break from sightseeing to explore one of our favorite spots- the National Videogame Museum and, naturally, they had to investigate the classics.

Nico tried out some of the systems that helped shape videogame history and made some new friends with familiar faces.

The museum has 4 levels full of arcade cabinets and all sorts of pieces of video game infamy. I especially wish I could try out the gameboy sewing machine personally.

Nico had a very important mission last week...
We traveled all the way to Arnhem for an official appointment with the KVK (Chamber of Commerce) to register Necessarily Nerdy as a business here in the Netherlands!

There were plenty of very serious business conversations and Nico took their role as Tiny Executive Assistant very seriously.
The best surprise? During our appointment, the employee pulled up the Necessarily Nerdy website and immediately recognized Ditto and Derpy! It made us smile in the middle of an otherwise serious day.

This was one of the biggest milestones on our journey, and it means we’re one step closer to reopening!

Now we’re down to the final stretch:
Waiting for the machines to finish their overseas journey.
Waiting on the last bit of paperwork.
Then it’ll finally be time to actually reopen!

Thank you all for your encouragement and excitement during this international adventure. We’re so close now, and I can’t wait to start creating again from our new home!

Nico has officially arrived... home.
After many adventures our tiniest traveler has finally landed in the Netherlands! Naturally, their first priorities were sampling a few Dutch treats and making sure the new house key actually worked. (It did!)
But this adventure represents something much bigger than a change of scenery.

For a long time, Necessarily Nerdy has been a dream built during evenings, weekends, lunch breaks, and every spare moment I could find while balancing a full-time career. Moving to the Netherlands through the Dutch American Friendship Treaty (DAFT) has given me the opportunity to build a life where this business isn’t squeezed into the margins.
That means more time designing new creations, improving the shop, connecting with all of you, and continuing to grow Necessarily Nerdy into a business that can help provide for my family while bringing a little extra joy into the world.

I also know many of you are wondering what this means for orders.
Shipping internationally, and the changing tariff and customs landscape, does create new challenges, especially for my customers in the United States. I’m committed to doing everything I can to keep shipping as affordable as possible and minimize those impacts wherever I can. The good news? Kitten Nuggets are excellent travelers... they pack light, don’t mind long flights, and fit surprisingly well in tiny boxes.

This move is the opportunity to give Necessarily Nerdy the time, focus, and future it’s always deserved. I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported this little business over the years. Your encouragement, purchases, kind words, and excitement made it possible to take this leap.

Thank you for following along on Nico’s adventure over the sea and beyond and I can’t wait to share more of it with you.

Nico has landed, and what an amazing land they’ve found!

There is so much to explore and share but here are just a few of the kitten sized sights that Nico has enjoyed so far.

It’s just about time for the reveal but there’s just a couple more stops to share first! It also might be about time to have some friends along for the ride. Any suggestions for which kitten nuggets should join the adventure?
