We're at the Art Spectacular at the Thomas Reese Memorial Carillon in Springfield, Illinois, this weekend. We'll be here until 5 today and from 10 to 4 tomorrow.

Covered Bridge Festival is just a few weeks away! We'll be selling utensils, vases, and other odds and ends at two locations this year. Steph will be set up at the Clay Plant Market just east of Bloomingdale on the weekends, and I'll be in the 1878 Barn in Bridgeton all 10 days.

Time to unpack .

We'd hoped to send a bit more of our wood weight home with other art appreciators from the Ann Arbor Art Fair. The wildfires had different plans, but we left satisfied and still very much enjoyed our first experience at this sprawling, impressive show.

We had great conversations with customers and fellow artists. One vase was purchased by a young man who is heading to Paris to visit a new girlfriend. Several other vases and utensils will be heading off for slightly less romantic destinations, but we always enjoy seeing people express their appreciation for the natural beauty of wood and have a vision for how it can decorate their spaces and their lives.

There's some haze in the land of The Maize and Blue, but several hundred artists are looking forward to sharing their work. Our sympathy goes out to our Ontario neighbors who are dealing more directly with the wildfires.

We are on State Street in front of the U of M Museum of Art, booth ST613, surrounded by a wide variety of work by artists from around the country.

I'll be heading up to the massive Ann Arbor Art Fair in Michigan this weekend. I usually try to post photos of recent work in the days leading up to a show. I forgot to do that today before packing everything up (see final pic), so I guess we'll go with some process photos.

This is some walnut I harvested from our woods several months ago, before the sap began to rise so that drying time would be shorter. Today I finally got around to splitting the logs into billets for spoons and knotty chunks for vases.

Notice how the darker Heartwood toward the ends of the wood had gotten some exposure to the air through small cracks and was beginning to deepen in color. Also, where the Heartwood meets the white sapwood, You can see the early stages of what will become a pretty purple band along that boundary.

The dark band of soft tissue in the middle (that I crush with a scrap) is called the pith. It is at the very center of the log and is essentially the remnants of the first year's growth.

I will stagger-stack these (like Lincoln Logs) for about a year before checking the moisture and cutting into them. The scrap sections that are too thin to sculpt will eventually be burned in our wood stove.

A walnut sapling occupying a few recent vases--two walnut and one sycamore. And then a spalted-maple offset spoon for good measure.

All of these items and many more will be going with me to the Talbot Street Art Fair in Indianapolis this Saturday and Sunday.

(The sapling was growing in the yard and had to be removed. There are a several dozen similar ones in the meadowy spaces that are sure to have a long, full life.)

We're a little bit and wet but all ready to go at Bronson Park in Kalamazoo for the KIA Arts Fair. Thanks to Mom for the last-minute rug purchase and to the KIA volunteers for bringing in some sand so our visitors can keep their feet dry while browsing.

The rain has moved on (at least for now), so come on down if you're looking for something to do this evening until 8 or tomorrow from 9 to 5.
