An illustration of one of the most effective and forgotten food preservation methods in human history - making pemmican. Lean cuts of Bison meat are shown hanging on racks above slow fires to dry, essentially resulting in Bison jerky. The fires and smoke help to keep egg laying flies away. The meat is then pounded on rocks into a fine powder and mixed in equal parts by weight with rendered Bison fat. This mixture, called pemmican, has been recorded to last for years when kept away from moisture and out of direct sunlight. It is also a complete food, containing all of the calories, minerals, and nutrients for human survival. There are detailed records of trappers, explorers, and first peoples subsisting on pemmican alone for many months without suffering from scurvy or any other nutritional deficiencies. Members of Survival Skill of the Month Club are learning how to make this amazing food in great detail this month.

What is everyone else using as a day pack? I’ve been running this GoRuck 20L Rucker pack for a year now and I love it! It’s become my go to day pack. I use it regularly for rucking and for day hikes and it barely looks used. It’s ridiculously comfortable carrying heavy loads for a pack this size with no hip belt. It is definitely built to last. I have plans to do a 3-4 day trip with only this pack this spring or summer to see if it can hold everything I need to get by.

Some pics of our campsite setup near Lake Superior in the U.P. Of Michigan. Thankfully Matt O'Dell grabbed some pics with me in them. We could see Canada across the Lake. Anyone else enjoy some camping in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan this year? Do you prefer ground dwelling, hammock or both?
